So I know there may be no definitive answer to this question I am just looking for opinions. Do you believe there will eventually be a universal standardizing test for both DO and MD like a combined USMLE/COMLEX? If not do you believe the COMLEX will accepted by MD schools for residency or will they still need to take the USMLE to have a shot at matching? All opinions welcome.

I believe that if there is a standardized test for all residencies, it will be the USMLE as that's already the standard for MD programs and MD's are unlikely to accept an option that validates OMM.

AOA (DO) and ACGME (MD) residency programs are merging in the coming years, projected to be complete by July 2020. Since you're a pre-med, you will likely be matching into this merged system (aka all accredited residencies will be ACGME accredited and thus MD students will be able to apply to residency programs that were formerly only for DOs).

The last I heard, COMLEX and USMLE are still going to be separate exams. According to the 2014 PD survey, a large number of ACGME residencies will use/look at COMLEX but USMLE still prevails. the majority of allopathic residency programs accept COMLEX scores as it is. To open even more doors, that's why people take the USMLE as well.

Are you sure?
It could be a regional difference, but I don't know a single program that accepts COMLEX in lieu of USMLE (including the ones that take DO's).

I stand corrected, the article I was referring to misinterpreted/took liberty with interpreting the data. I took a look at the source (http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/PD-Survey-Report-2014.pdf) and while a large number of programs "use" the COMLEX, that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll take it in lieu of USMLE.

There are plenty, especially in Primary Care. My grads get into a good number of these.

I do believe that at some point USMLE will be the standard licensing exsm, and COMLEX will be a DO exit exam.

I would think this makes the most sense.
