Hey again...
So I was thinking I might possibly apply to some vet schools in the US but I don't really know anything about the GRE. I Looked on the website and it was saying something about a subject test and then there's the plain one or something... Can you give me more info about which one is better to take? Cuz i really don't know!

Most vet schools want the general test. I think a few might also look at a subject test, but I'm not sure. Check with the individual schools that you want to apply to.

just from reading threads from those who have taken both the general and subject tests, i think some consider one to be easier than the other. the general test is split into two sections - verbal and quantitative, testing areas such as vocabulary and math skills. then there is a small writing section at the end. this writing portion is scored, and some US schools require this score along with the quantitative and verbal scores.

i don't know much about the subject tests, so maybe someone who does will help us out, but it is focused on a particular subject, rather than general vocab. and math. most schools require the general test, but some also require a subject test to be taken and submitted as well.

i know this is very minimal, but hope it helps in some way. 🙂

Yup, take the plain one, unless you see that there's a school that you REALLY want to apply to that wants a subject test...but that's rare.

I had to take the subject test for University of Georgia. I honestly thought it was a breeze compared to the general test (I was done in 1/2 the time alloted). I hadn't used the information tested on the general GRE since HS/1st year in college, yet the biology was all right there in my brain bc I was in the middle of my upper level biology classes.

I loved the fact that UGA took the subject test bc I did score highly on it and it helped my app. I did not study or prepare at all for it (except that I was in biology classes) besides looking over botany notes the night before to brush up. I think it helped since I had an average general score, not quite average GPA (slightly below) but nailed the subject.

The only other school to require the biology GRE is Oklahoma.

I would not discount those 2 schools because they require another test because it REALLY is not that bad, especially when all the biology is fresh on your mind.

Hang on... All US schools require the GRE general test (*). Georgia and Oklahoma also require the biology subject test. (And UGA really means business - I took the biochem subject test, which is way harder than the biology one, and they told me to stuff it. They will only accept the bio test.) Some schools may "recommend" the bio or biochem subject test, but not require it. But I don't think there are any schools that will accept a subject test in place of the general test - they test totally different things.

(*) There are some schools, mentioned on other recent threads, that will accept either the MCAT *or* the GRE general test - both test vocab/reading/writing and math, the MCAT also has something like physical sciences.

Looks like it's whether or not they use the VMCAS application. For most schools, you submit VMCAS and then they may have some extra supplemental stuff you have to do - extra essays, different GPA calculations, etc. (check the school requirements page on the VMCAS site for specifics on each school). A couple schools - Tufts comes to mind - don't use the VMCAS application at all but have their own online app. So if you want to apply to Tufts in addition to some VMCAS schools, you have to enter all your info all over again into their app.
