As someone who has never lived in a city, is it truly possible to survive on an intern's salary? For example, AMC in NYC pays about 24,000 (before tax), and offers housing at 1000/month. I can live off of a relatively small amount, but I've never had to buy groceries in a big city and have no idea how much more it will cost.
Another example is Upenn. They pay about 26,000 before taxes. I'm not sure what kind of housing I can get with that and still eat, but I would like to live somewhere relatively safe...Philly has a bit of a reputation.
So do people actually make it by on this amount in big cities? I'm not married, so I don't have any second income to help me out. I'll get a room mate and all that, but still it seems a little unrealistic.
My family seems to think I'm insane to think I could survive on that in those cities....but people do it...right?
Thanks!!
