I'd appreciate some advice for my rank list. I'm Canadian (no flaming!!) so most of you have better insight into these programs than I. Here's how my list stacks up thus far:

1. UNC
2. UFlorida
3. UKentucky
4. UWisconsin
5. UPMC
6. Wayne State DMC
7. St. Luke's - Roosevelt (Manhattan)
8. St. Joe's, Patterson (NJ)

* The last two are PURELY for backup. Thanks for the help guys!

PS. Location isn't an issue for me whatsover. Just want a strong program.

You wont go past No. 2. Great program though.

I'm a little unclear as to what you mean Treasurefull.

I'm partial to UPMC, so I'd redo your current list as you have it listed now - I'd put them at number one. Great program, great name, great treatment of residents. Even a decent town for a hockey game, eh? 😉

EVERYONE has great things to say about UNC, so that is a very favorable choice for a number one as well. Don't forget to check out the Residency interview reviews, which are filled with great info. UF seemed to come off as a complete experience but with more hours worked than some of the others you'd listed.

Last, but most importantly, what are you looking for? Going back North afterwards? Wanna stay here? Do academics? Those might factor in your decisions as well.

Good luck

Thanks bigdan! In all honesty I'd like to stay in the states. I'm looking for something a bit warmer than Toronto so *almost* everything on my list will do. I guess my only concern at this point is Florida b/c I've heard such different reviews...good program, nice place, but hellish hours. Hopefully I'll get this sorted quick.

Sage -

Where in Canada? I'm from upstate NY, near Syracuse. I've got a good friend in Mississauga...you near NY at all?

Pittsburgh is the most academic of the places you listed: good NIH funding, has (almost) all the fellowships that an anesthesiologist could want, HUGE network of folks. Huge transplant, with THE guy that made livers possible still lurking around. A reasonable drive home in one day if you're heading back to Toronto or arguably into Ottawa...Montreal is probably a bit far. I was completely serious about that hockey thing; I am already looking into getting season tickets for Penguins games. I would be hard pressed to agree you would get BETTER training elsewhere on your list: Pitt's got a huge surgical volume, free standing Children's Hospital is coming, AND they seem to treat their residents well. That said, Pittsburgh is not gonna be tons warmer than Toronto, and Fl most certainly will be, as will Kentucky, UNC, and Manhattan. You may not find much warmer temps in Detroit or Wisconsin.

Nice list either way.

If you're looking warm then UNC and UF will give you that, and they both seem to be great programs. UK is a fine program from what I've heard, but in a slightly colder climate than UNC. I didn't interview at UF, but I know they'll a very well-respected program that'll give you excellent training. I've heard rumors they're one of the harder working programs, but I see nothing wrong with that for residency training. If I were you, I'd be happy with any of the programs at the top of your list.

I'd have to agree with bigdan, UPMC is no doubt the best overall program from your list; great training, great reputation, and any fellowship you could want. Not quite Florida though when it comes to weather....

Thanks guys! Your advice is very reassuring 😀

I would say based on reputation and location
UF
UNC
Univ of wisconsin ( I heard from multiple people is very well respected nationally and hard to get into - not great weather)
UPMC (people seem to overrate alot-especially northerners)
Uk
Wayne st

UPMC has definitely crept up my list. Now my only issue is differentiating Kentucky from Wisconsin. Anyone have any input on these two? I've heard great things about both.

Met PD from Kentucky + his family/kids at UNM's hotel. Down to earth friendly guy. Can't go wrong with Kentucky there. Heard great things about UPMC. 👍 Don't know much about Wisconsin.
