I'm in my last year of high school and I would like to go into pharmacy school. I'm already signed up at Grand Valley State University for my pre requisites. Yet, another question I read about recession bugged something in me. People are getting frustrated with the recession and money issues are becoming complicated. And there is "talk" about changing our medical system to one's like the UK. And that's okay, well with me at least. But, what about the idea that all of these pharmacy schools are opening lately? Is that going to put a serious cramp into the need for pharmacists?I read somewhere that the need for pharmacists is going to extend to the year 2016. Then what? Only a few jobs will be available for the many graduates projected? I don't know this bugs me, that I might not be able to find a job right away. I think I might just be over reacting. 🙁

Yes, take a deep breath and relax. Freaking out is part of the creative process, so I'm not going to fault you for it. As of right now, pharmacy schools are opening like mad, but they're still not putting a dent in our need for pharmacists. You WILL be able to find a job. People ALWAYS need healthcare professionals. Even today, people graduating aren't finding the job they want right away -- recession proof doesn't mean fall-in-your-lap. My advice to you is to keep your goal on pharmacy if that really is your goal. As you finish your prereqs and are moving closer to your goal, you'll be prepared for pharmacy or another area of healthcare/science. I understand that sometimes you just want to worry about something, but please don't let it be this. Good luck; you'll find a way. 🙂

The issue of opening up pharmacy schools where there is no need or ability to gain enough preceptors/clinical sites was addressed this year at APhA's annual meeting. The profession knows that there is a possibility of the too many schools opening up and not having the resources available to properly train those students. Rest assured, we are used to regulating ourselves and the profession is doing just that. You can aim for your goals and achieve them without worry about nothing being there for you.
