another rejection!!!!???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
well, i spoke with new jersey and they told me that my BCP is low and thats why i got rejected! she said that everything else was just fine and good, but my 2.8 BCP was no good!!
Thats why i studied so hard to kill the DAT, especially the sciences!!!!! and i did.

and my advisor told me not to take any more classes, becuase i would need to take a ton and it still would raise it very little. he said to focus on the DAT and thats it, and thats what i did!

and i think when i speak to temple, they will give me the same reason.
do you guys think i am probably done? 3.2 cum, sciences, 2.8 bcp, 20aa+ DAT SCORES?
i think i am done. 🙁

i don't agree with your academic advisor. figure out how many science courses you need to take to raise your gpa to a 3.0+ and take them. keep your hopes up for this cycle but start thinking ahead in case you need to improve your stats. you also may consider a non-thesis masters to show a strong gpa.

i think it is still too early to tell how your chances are going to play out this cycle. how many schools are you still waiting to hear from? also, did you do poorly in your bcp classes the 1st 2 yrs. in college and then improve your last 2 yrs.?

wait it out first. if worse comes to worst, then you may want to do the grad school thing first.

here is something from last year to lighten the mood!
Dear ADCOM,

Thank you for taking the time to review my
application. I have received your letter of rejection
for admissions to the class of 2010 and it has been
reviewed. After careful consideration, I have decided
that I cannot accept your rejection at this time.
Unfortunately, I have received an unusually high
number of qualified rejections this year, and I simply
cannot accept all of them. Please plan on my
attendance at your school next fall.

Sincerely,

Best of luck, because we all need it!

Keep your head up messenger. I have a GPA just slightly below 3 and similar DAT scores. Though I received many rejection letters I remained persistant. This is my third year applying, and I have interviewed at UNC, ASDOH, and Creighton. I feel good this year, 3rd times the charm:luck:

how many schools have you yet to hear from?

you need to try and stop freaking out so you can calmly call each school and make sure you are being rejected for you bcp gpa at each school and ask for their advice. YOU NEED TO ASK THEM WHAT THEY WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO TO IMPROVE YOUR APP FOR NEXT YEAR (ie. take more undergrad classes to improve your undergrad gpa OR complete a non-thesis masters, etc.)

i have about ten or eleven more schools to go. i tried calling the other schools and left messages. only spoke with umdnj and they told me to enroll in graduate studies. thats it.

i feel like im going to get rejected left and right now (since its happening already). i dont know how i can calm down. 🙁

okay, you still have a lot of schools to hear from, and it is good to hear that there was an upward trend in your gpa. i still think there is light at the end of the tunnel. did you apply to louisville by any chance b/c i know they look at upward trends in low gpa applicants?

i would still keep trying to call the schools to get in touch with someone who can talk to you about your app. in case there was something other than your gpa and to help if you do reapply (hopefully this won't happen).

thank you. i havent applied to loiusville, but i am thinking about adding couple more schools....so i will include them. do you think its tooo late though? too late to add any schools?

yeah i kept trying to call the schools and olny spoke with umdnj, and assumed that the rest of them have denied me b/c of the bcp grades 🙁

maybe call up the schools you would apply to before you actually apply? if the rest of them would reject you cuz of your bcp, then you may have to seriously consider grad school first.

id guess that maybe someone wrote a not-so-good recommendation letter. your stats are competitive, but thats something that you havent seen and have no idea if they wrote good/bad things...

agreed

this is a good idea. i have no idea if by the time lousiville got your app. they would still consider you or if it would be too late. i would definitely call any schools you are thinking about adding and ask if you add them to your aadsas app. will they consider your upward trend in your gpa as an applicant.

If I were you, I would take as many upper level courses if possible or pursue a masters degree in biology and also work in a dental office. These things would show that you are committed to becoming a dentist and will also make your life much easier when you do get into dental school.

It may sound dramatic or far-fetched, but I know people who have done this and gone on to do very well in dental school, especially once they had "already seen" the material that is often presented in dental school at high volume.

Take the DAT again also, once you are ready for it. You will get in, but don't quit on your dream.

ok thanks everyone. i will take the suggestions into consideration ( i hope i dont have to....and will never take the DAT again) but i have questions.

do you think its possible if i called up the rest of the sschools that I am waiting for.....and ask them, lets see, what my actual chances are still for interview?? does anyone ever do that? is that weird? what can i say? 🙁

and i will call other swchools i plan on adding on monday....anyone know what would be good to say to them? thanks for the advice you guys.🙁

i wouldn't waitsting your money on louisville...i just talked to them and they already have 3000 applicants...so they are looking at 21+ DAT's. just trying to help. You should be fine with the schools you are applying to.

OMG, that is crazy :scared:. i LOVED that school!!! it is one of my top choices. do you have any idea how many out-of-staters they are planning to interview this year? it looked like around 300 last year from the presentation they gave at my interview, but it was hard to tell.

i will be very upset if i don't get accepted at louisville 🙁

what did you like about the school?

everything!! the facilities, the faculty the students. i even liked louisville!!! i was just so impressed with the level of commitment of the faculty to the students. i have not seen that at any other school at which i have interviewed. plus, the students all seemed to really like each other and get along well. and, the school went totally out of its way to make the interviewing experience a great one. it was the best interviewing day i have had; it was evident that the school truly wants to make each candidate feel welcome 🙂 even the woman in charge of financial aid was amazing and unlike any other financial aid person i have seen. it is evident that she is going to do everything in her power to help you as soon as you are accepted get the best financial arrangements. she will even sit down with you and make out budgets!!! 😱

Yea, but are there hot girls there?

Seriously 🙄

Have you been to a dental school yet that didn't have hot chicks? 😛

perhaps you should go to a dental school where they share classes with the dental hygienists

whoa.
I thought one of the purpose for the DAT was to be an equalizer. So if you can do really well on the DAT and prove that you know your Bio, Chem and O chem by getting 20+ shouldn't that redeem your 2.8 bcp? I hope the remaining schools put that into consideration.

DAT's just one measure of performance. It's a standardized test, so it's important in that respect. But by no means would it replace 4 yrs of quality undergraduate work. Having excelled in both is expected. The TWO predictors of dental school success are undergraduate GPA and DAT score.

wow... sounds cool. what did you like about the city and where else did you interview at? thanks in advance.

the city was a good size for me (medium size). it is located on a river. the downtown is undergoing a lot of revitalization. the COL is cheap. also, at louisville you have the opportunity to be involved in zoo dentistry and forensic dentistry, how cool is that?

there are lots of things to do in the town, riverboats, zoos, crazy caves to explore, vineyards you can visit, nice parks, etc. i took a huge stack of brochures from my hotel that i haven't even had time finish looking through.

besides louisville, i am interviewing at: nova, case, u. of kentucky, wvu, and unc.

ok so...i havent been rejected by any more schools yet (knocking on wood). except for those 4 🙁
i am adding couple more but thats it i think.

does anyone think that its a good idea to call the schools ive already applied to and ask if i "still have a chance?"

does anyone have good idea for what to say? like, ok, is my application competitive still...or something!!!!!!!!!! i dont know?

any advice or help PLEASE!!🙁

Seriously 🙄

Yes, it had a hot chick, that was all lol. And it will remain unnamed...

Nova had a hot chick, then I saw her again at Ohio State. Her boyfriend goes there!

de-ja-vu

 That's pretty funny considering the odds of that happening.

I think that personal statement and LOR can make or break if the GPA and DAT scores are borderline. If you are rejected, look at your personal statement and find a way to make it more impressive. Perhaps it is too "standard", ie. " I love to work with my hands or I love helping people" type. Also, I don't know if it is possible but avoid using the ones with check boxes for LORs. First, these forms tell nothing about you. Second, many professors would hesitate to give all 10 so they have to give you some 7,8s and that can hurt you. If you look at these forms, there are even boxes that say " I do not recommend" or "I recommend with reservations". Now, you tell me if you want someone with those ratings take up a coveted spot in dental school? So typed letters are much better than those "evaluation forms". I often think how they can be called LORs when these can render the applicants zero chance of being accepted if "I do not" boxes are checked? Ask your profs for a personal letter rather than those forms. Finally don't sweat since there are no guarantees that you will be accepted with stellar scores or rejected with subpar grades. Wait and don't freak out. DP
