Hi, I'm an MS4 who's been following some of the posts.

I read through the thread on why our residency application expenses are not tax deductible. All the input is much appreciated since I had exactly the same question.

Here's one more question along the same lines:

Does anyone know if by any chance the cost of Step 2CK and CS are tax-deductible?

The quick answer is no.

But I am sure you will find those who do it anyway. It comes down to an IRS audit. You will get hammered on it if you get caught. But Methy is right.

It depends on how you pay for it. If you have scholarships that go above and beyond tuition and fees, you have to pay taxes on the portion that pays for other stuff (room, board, food, travel, etc). However, since most schools require that you take Step II CS/CK for graduation, it counts as a "required fee," and is thus part of the non-taxable portion of the scholarship (at least I think so). Otherwise, I don't think it would be tax deductible.
