Hello.
i want to finish my medicine residency and want to apply for the surgery residency.
is this possible? do i have better chance of getting into surgery program?
It is possible. The major question is why. This isn't a TV sitcom, you don't do both. Pick one.
it doesnt really matter why he wants to do it...it just matters that he can show why he wants to be a surgeon.
go for it!
i knew this was coming. everyone around me is like...😱😱😱
but hey!! you got to at least try what you really wanna do. I still miss being in OR, scrubbed, miss the smell of bovies...
i don't miss being on call at all but...i really miss real surgical procedure, not like endoscope/chest tube/lines in some medicine subspecialties.

Basically, Medicare typically does not fully reimburse a hospital for a resident doing a second residency. A hospital usually only gets 50% of the reimbursement for a second residency. This means that very very few hospitals will accept a resident for a second residency, especially when there is an almost endless supply of FMGs wanting to do a first residency for which the hospital will receive 100% reimbursement. The link below explains the situation in more detail.
