For the "what have you done to improve" (for reapplicants) and "what are your current plans for the year" essays, is it necessary to explain why you are doing/did them, why it's meaningful or what you hope to get out of the experience if it doesn't ask? I feel that it is fairly self explanatory and I want to avoid being unnecessarily verbose if possible.

If the Secondary prompt doesn't ask for it, there's no reason to add wordage to your response just to fill up the space. Be succinct and give targeted responses about the information requested (thus demonstrating you have good reading comprehension).

Just make sure to paint it in a positive light
