So, here's the stuff about me:
Gpa 3.57, bpcm 3.1 (makes me squirm with nervousness to look at it - I took too many classes my first two years and it didn't go so well... competitive school, though, if that helps at all)
MCAT: 38T
Research + thesis
Part-time undergrad job with leadership position
Leadership roles in two student organizations that were meaningful to me
Good amount of shadowing & volunteering, I think
1 year off after college, during which I've been teaching English abroad full time (in Europe)
NJ resident
And here's the list so far:
Uber-reach apply-just-to-have-no-regrets schools: UPenn, Columbia, NYU ...okay, admittedly, I'd feel really lucky to get in anywhere. I'll just continue with the rest of the list now.
Mt. Sinai
Jefferson
Drexel
Temple
Penn State (don't know much about these last 3 actually... thoughts?)
UMDNJ-RWS
UMDNJ (although I'm kind of scared of Newark)
U Maryland
Georgetown
GWU (although those two are really expensive, right?)
UVA
VCU (unless... are these Virginia schools competitive? Mainly, I was aiming for state schools where I might have a chance, except looking south rather than north because of the weather. I've done the being cold thing and it was depressing at times... I figure I can use all the help I can in terms of staying cheerful in med school.)
Things I'm thinking about: location (east coast, preferrably not the frozen-stiff part), I like the idea of pass/fail and cooperative classmates, I learn better on my own than in groups, I'm really interested in global health and maybe possibly pursuing an MPH as well as an MD, or at least sitting in on some of the courses just for fun... but most importantly, I'm scared of not applying widely enough or having enough realistic schools. Suggestions for additional ones? Any you'd recommend getting rid of on the list I've already got?
Thanks so much in advance!!
