Another transferring question

Has anyone successfully transferred between residencies? I want to transfer to one of the vacancies for family reasons. I don't want to anger my current PD or do anything that might violate sfmatch agreements. If I don't get that position, I'd like to stay where I am. Is transferring possible or realistic? What are the steps for transferring? I'd like to hear people's experiences.

I know of at least two who transferred, and though I dont have first hand experience, I can tell you the basics. You write to the vacancy, if theyre interested they'll ask you for more details, at which point you tell your PD. Hopefully they'll play ball and communicate with other PD, and not be vindictive. Then you decide on a time to transfer. In one case, the resident actually resigned from the first program for whatever reason, and applied when a vacancy was available elsewhere. In the second case, resident applied while still enrolled, told PD, PD agreed, and allowed resident to finish the year before transferring.

As another poster mentioned elsewhere on the forum, your Match legalities end the day you JOIN and START the program. After that, every contract has an ending clause, and you can leave if you want.
