I know this is institution specific but, I was wondering how us entering internship next year should request vacation time or if we should request it at all. I'm pretty sure the place I am going to stated that residents can request their preferred weeks off ... doesn't necessarily mean they will get it though.

I don't want to look like a putz asking for time off already but, if I can get a certain week off I would like to try. So, please let me know how you went about getting your vacation time as an intern (did you email the PD, chiefs or just wait and cross your fingers).

thanks 😉

Most Administrative Chiefs (or whomever is responsible for the call schedule) will notify you when you start to request vacation time for the year. You can usually give a reason why you would like a certain week off (ie, family wedding, etc.) and I would imagine most places would try and honor that, although often senior residents and Chiefs are given priority when it comes to conflicts (of course, they may defer to you if you have a good reason to be off that certain week and they don't).

Assuming that you don't need time off in July, I would wait until you start residency because they will start making the schedule shortly after the year starts. Many programs limit vacation time during the summer and over the holidays because of the need to get everyone up to speed during the summer and the need to minimize the number of people gone at the same time during the winter holidays.

So, IMHO you should just wait until you start residency - they will tell you who makes the schedules and when they want your vacation requests in by.

Many medicine programs make the schedule now (or in the next 1-2 months), and set your non-call blocks in place. In surgery (and some others) there are no non call blocks, and so you can kinda take vacation anytime (although taking vacation is a sign of weakness 😉 ) So, you should check with your program.

Chances are you will receive a "welcome packet" shortly explaining all of this. If not, call the program administrator -- they will know.
