Anticipating Homesickness

I have read these forums for a while but feel inclined to finally ask for advice:

So I move away to med school in a few weeks that is 3 hours away from my house. I have to say, this is my first time moving away from home and up until a week ago I was excited, but now I'm a little freaked out. My question is did anyone else experience this? I really want to hit the ground running in school, but I feel like my anxiety about moving is going to make things a little (maybe very) difficult.

Any advice?
 
I think that pretty much everyone experiences that when they move away. I suggest that you be social right from the start. There will be a lot of activities in the first week to help everyone meet each other. Go to those. Make friends.

Also, if you are 3 hours away by car then that isn't too bad. You can drive home sometimes.
 
I moved from IN to AZ, which is 27 hours by car. I've been here a little less than a month and I know what you mean. Being a social butterfly the first few weeks really has helped. You find more people in the same situation, and everyone is very friendly and eager to meet new people. I bet once school s*@t really hits the fan with classes we will all be too busy to dwell on the negatives of moving. Just my two cents. Good luck, and remember: You're going to MEDICAL SCHOOL!!! 😀😱
 
3 hours is virtually nothing, you'll be too busy to be homesick, and your parents will probably rent out your room while you're gone anyway. Either that or turn it into a sick billiard room.

Quoted for emphasis. I've lived five hours from my family for two years now. During my undergraduate years, I'd call home three or four times a week. Two weeks into medical school, I think I've had time and remembered to call once. You'll seriously be so busy that family moves to a corner of your mind (Sounds horrible, but it's the truth.)
 
I know how you feel starting school and moving away. I also lived at home for all of my life until I moved away for medical school. I thought that I would be homesick since I have a freakishly close family. But, I wasn't homesick AT ALL.

You will be way to busy to be homesick. You can call home and Skype every single day too! Gotta love Skype!!!!

It won't be as bad as you anticipate.

Grow up huh? I can guarantee to be at least 10 years older than you, and I'm very homesick. I left my husband and son 1800 miles away and can't go back on a whim. I have studied 5 hrs/day + 10/weekend days to "keep busy." And yet, I'm miserable. I'm hoping that things get better as I go along.

Homesickness is very real and very normal. If you back out of an opportunity for homesickness, then its a different situation. Don't tell people to grow up. This is a normal part of going away for the first time. Just be glad you can go home for holidays and special family events.

I think there's a serious difference between getting used to being away from home for the first time and having to leave your spouse and child. Moving away from home really is a matter of growing up and becoming an adult, in most cases. Being without your spouse and child is not the norm, and it's exceptionally difficult.

Jesus, medical school isn't worth that...
 
I admit to feeling particularly sensitive when I wrote that last post. It is only for a year that we will be separated. However, my point was trying to liken my situation to that of the OP. Whether you have a spouse/child that you are leaving behind or your family which is like your spouse, the homesickness is real and normal.

I don't think we should bash the person just going out on their own for the first time because they have these feelings. They are going to feel them. Again, if they forego an opportunity for the homesickness, then it is time to "grow up."

gosh as i went thru med school to internship to residency i got farther and farther from home..but I never had time to be home sick as I had to study all the time! I got home sick when i started to decide where to do my practice....15 years later

Cut the cord and enjoy the experience.
You are only 3 hours away...go home whenever you want.

Just think...not living with your parents will allow you to get more vag than you could imagine.
