Would having diagnosed anxiety or depression affect chances of getting into medical school if the school finds out an applicant has such problems?

Why do you think they're gonna find out?

If they find out yes it would affect your chances. Unfortunately, the stigma of mental health is still present in the healthcare profession. But on the other hand, their concerns and reasons for not accepting someone with mental health issues can be warranted. One of the biggest reasons people drop out of medical school is due to mental health issues. Mental health issues can affect how one performs and deals with the stresses of medical school.

Get help for your mental health before going to medical school.

If one has a prolonged stretch of academic excellence, it won't be an issue.

However, do keep in mind that medical school is a furnace, and I've seen it break even healthy students. The #1 reason my school loses students to withdrawal, dismissal or LOA is to unresolved mental health issues.

So make sure that your issues are under 100% control. Good luck!

Basically, my roommate is moving out and I want to request a single dorm room because I have some anxieties about living with others. I have to now disclose my anxiety to the school with a doctors note. Is the privacy of my health records now waived through FERPA? Could my university disclose these records with my educational records being released to graduate school applications? Thanks in advance
