Any 2nd bachelor's students out there?

UCSB Spanish , CSU cell-molecular bio 2nd bachelor

I'm going to start a 2nd Bac at a CSU in the fall after I graduate from a UC this May. I really wanted to do a post-bac program, but 2nd bac is significantly cheaper, I can stay local, and I can get more than one year of financial aid. Overall, a far better financial arrangement, although I'm sad I'll miss out on the cohort setup of the postbacs I was looking at.

I doubt I'll actually finish the second bac, however. Depends on how many extra classes outside the premed reqs I'll need to take.

Are you doing this at Fullerton? Doesn't it take longer to do a second bac than a postbac?

Well for starters, you don't have to finish the second bac (as far as I know). For what I plan to do, it'll be pretty much the exact same thing as a postbac, just without the exorbitantly expensive costs.

I am a second bachelors student.

Just wondering....is anyone doing a 2nd bac on Bio-related major while having 1st bac with Bio-related major already? (primarily for cheaper tuition on gpa enhancement) for ex: 1st: molecular and cell biology & 2nd: biochem or physio or microbio etc

I'm not (I'm going from Psych to... Nursing, since it's the only second BA the school offers. Probably won't finish it), but from what I've read on various school webpages, you should be okay. As long as it's not in the exact same subject, such as getting a BA in Geology and then a BS in Geology, it's fine.

Major is irrelevant for the most part - you need are upper level sciences and rock-star grades.

Whether thats biochem or molec bio or neuroscience - it doesn't make a massive diff as long as you maximize BCPM-eligible classes

I also did not do this. One piece of advice: the institution in which I did my second bachelors pointed out i have to do at least half of the major's courses at their school (meaning, i couldn't just count a lot of transfer credit from the first school). You may run into a situation like this with having taken a lot of courses applicable to your major at your second school.

Well, at my CSU you can't have a Bio degree and then apply for a 2nd degree in Bio even if it's a different concentration. Look at the school or contact someone to try to find out. If you majored in Bio, a good alternative would be to get your 2nd BS in Biochemistry since this major is offered by the Chemistry department so it's considered different 🙂

I actually think I may be able to finish a second degree before I start pharmacy school in Fall 2012...I hope!:xf: But now I'm running into this silly requirement of having to take 12 upper division GE units that MUST be taken at the CSU....really? I already have a bachelor's degree and I have to take GE classes? Seems unnecessary.

Hi, for the second bachelors, did you get mostly get subsidized or unsubsidized loans? I'm finishing my anthropology degree this year and trying to see how second bachelor's work out at a cal state. I would like cal state LA because it's closer to my house so I can commute and go to school while working. Thanks for your time.

are you at CSUN? that requirements sound so like csun

How is that you all are doing 2nd bachelors? I was under the impression that at CSU's and UC's (in california) you cannot get a second BA.

When you applied did you just not mention that you already had a BA from a different university?

I'm doing 2nd bachelors b/c 1) I ran out of classes to take at other institution 2) I needed 2+years of coursework to raise my GPA (i was sub 3.0). 3) the tuition is cheaper compared to some other postbacs.
I think I did mention my undergrad major during application.

Some Cal public Unis will accept applications for a second bachelors, but some will not. Or if they do, only a specialized program. Fullerton, for example, is only accepting students for their BSN program this year.

CSULB took 2nd bachelors in microbiology 😀

it was nice talking to ppl from berkeley and ucla 😀 a lot more involved and focused than csulb students 😛

Do they still accept 2nd bac?

Does anyone know any CSU/UC that still accept 2nd bac as bio related major (not nursing nor dental hygiene)?

Second baccalaureate degree applicants for 2011-12 will be considered only in the following majors within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences: biotechnology, (pre) landscape architecture, and viticulture and enology. for UC DAVIS

is that close enough? 😛

and yes i think csulb still offers 2nd bachelor's degrees for microbio

i got my first degree there as microbio. it iis being overwhelmed with freshmen (its impacted now) so if u want to apply, do it ASAP.

CSULB - Second Bachelors Deadline: November 30, 2011 🙁((((

and I think the UC deadline is already passed fosho since I went to Berkeley as undergrad

Depending on how demanding the advisers are in a program, you could sign up with the intent to complete a degree in one thing, take a year of bio classes, and say sayonara. This may not work if you have to approve your schedule with an adviser who demands you take classes for your degree

LOL yes are you there too? How did you know?

Wow it's been a while since I started this thread, and I've come a long way - almost done with my 2nd degree!
I wouldn't recommend doing a 2nd degree at a UC. Why waste all that money to sit in a 500 person bio lecture hall, yuck. At my CSU my bio classes are small - some of them just have 16 people in them and we actually have labs compared to UC's which don't have a lot of lab classes. Sometimes I wish I went to straight to a CSU, but I did have a good time with my anthro degree and am glad I have that background.

Only some of the CSU's take 2nd BA's and only in some subjects. CSUN takes 2nd BA's for most subjects except econ and business b/c these are popular majors here.

haha i guessed it. because I ran into same requirement (12 unit upper div GE ) to declare graduation. I only have 2 semesters left to finish, although this is my first semester here. Mind If I pm you about certain professors and what you thought about their classes or class suggestion?

sure, pm away

BTW, for any lurkers out there, if you can go to CSULA instead of CSUN do that. I wish I did that instead. CSULA has much more variety of bio classes and they don't fill up. CSULA also has a really good microbio program for anyone interested in that field. Important to note though that CSULA is a quarter school whereas CSUN is semester. good luck people👍

I'm a second bachelor's student. I earned a BA in health care while in the military, I just left the military to earn a second bacholers for the prereqs.

Hi,

I stumbled upon this forum after doing an exhaustive search for information about Cal States and 2nd Bachelors degrees. I graduated in Spring 2011 from CSUF with a BA in Spanish and would like to go back for a Bachelors in Business Admin. (Human Resources). After tons of research though, it seems that the CSU system doesn't allow students to pursue 2nd BA's, so I'm wondering how those of you on this forum were are able attend a CSU after previously completing a bachelors??? I have even researched universities in Canada and am considering a private loans to study abroad which will be EXTREMELY expensive. Hopefully, someone can shed some light for me...JackieB, are you sure about CSUN not accepting 2nd BA's for the business major? ....

I can't find the exact link on the internet anymore, but I'm 99% positive that CSUN doesn't offer 2nd bac for business.

Hmmm... I called CSULA on last friday , they said due to budget cut in CA, NONE of the CSU is offering the 2nd bachelor degree. If I want to full fill the pre med requirements , check out CSU FULLERTON post bacc.

Hi,

.JackieB, are you sure about CSUN not accepting 2nd BA's for the business major? ....

"Please Note: Second BA or BS applications are currently not considered for admission to majors in the College of Business and Economics at Cal State Northridge"

It's possible that this specific link has not been updated and that 2nd BA's are not going to be accepted for Fall, I don't know. Call CSUN Admissions and ask!

I think thats not a good idea, why waste your time? time is priceless. If you want to enhance your gpa look into Masters in the medical sciences. Some of them, I cant remember which school, even lets you take first med classes and if you do well they will let accept you into their med school.

Another option is to do postbac, but i think you would need to take the mcat and then enroll in the program and they let you take upper level bio classes, do research and write you rec letters. So look into this. Doing a second Bio degree is pointless and probably boring too as you will repeating alot of the same things. Good Luck!

Oh wow this seems like a great idea. so even if youve already graduated...you can re enroll at your ugrad institution and just declare a second major and not finish it to enhance the sgpa/ cgpa?

Yes, it is a great idea. However, not all institutions allow you to re-enroll for a second bachelor's, so that's information that you'll have to gather from the school you want to apply to. For example, here at UF, they want to kick you out after 4 years unless you're an engineer or something (who spend like 5 years in undergrad), so no second bachelor's here.

Hmm i talked to an advisor recently and they said its hard to get classes as a 2nd bac student and some schools like CSULB are kicking out super seniors and not allowing 2nd bac starting this week? because of budget cuts...she said we were in a 9 billion deficit now 16 billion...

I dont know thats what she told me..im taking classes as an Open University Student for the moment over the summer...hope to get some classes at CSUF this fall since thats my home school...but still giong to apply to Goucher and this fall =)

Just wanted to see if I can find anyone in similar boat as me. I graduated from UCSD with degree in Anthro and started a 2nd bac at a CSU in Biology.
Did you complete the assist.org agreements first or...?? I was considering 2nd bac bc of the higher cost of a postbac, however I'm not sure how to go about it.
