Hey, all. Thanks for all the great advice up to this point...it's really helped. I was just wondering if there are any current/former peds residents who have any specific advice or general things to consider when requesting a particular "track" for intern year. I know it will be hard either way, but what types of things should I be thinking about to make the transition to residency and the rest of the year less painful (i.e. do I schedule hard months right away when even though I have no idea what's going on in the or my life?, scheduling vacations, etc.) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you're doing residency far away from your friends & family, request vacation or elective over the holidays. It can be really hard & lonely to be stuck in the hospital during this time, and if you're on a call rotation you probably won't be able to make it home for the holidays, unless your program has some sort of staggered coverage (i.e., everyone gets 4 days off over the holidays but goes q2 for the other 4 days), which some do.

agree with this, and would add that you should try to get at least one ICU block done early-- it will make call much less stressful, and will give you a chance while you get more freebies to learn the ropes. schedule electives later in the year when you will know high yield stuff to gain from them (after being on the ward and consulting them you'll know what i mean), and to see if you may be interested in them for fellowship.

other that that, try not to do too many inpatient blocks in a row, unless you're a glutton for punishment.
