Hey,

For those of you that interviewed at KCOM, any advice on how to get to kirksville? As of now I'm planning on flying into Quincy, IL and driving 2 hours into Kirksville. any better way of doing it? Other option would be St. Louis and 4.5 hour drive to Kirksville. Anyone care to comment on their travel experience? How bad/good is either drive? Normally I'd just suck it up and deal with the travel time required, but i'm interviewing at AZCOM and CCOM earlier that same week. Yipes!! Excited but no looking forward to the flying/driving.

I flew in to Kansas City, then rented a car and drove to Kirskville. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive or so. Drive was beautiful. I mapquested it.

I stayed at the Comfort in, they give a discount if you tell them you are interviewing for KCOM. It's like $53/night. They have a killer breakfast and give you a map to KCOM.

Good luck!

St. Louis is only three hours away from Kirksville, not 4 and 1/2. There is an airline that offers service to La Plata (Kirksville Regional Airport) from Kansas City, this will cost you more. I recommend the Kansas City drive as mentioned above, its not too bad at all.

Here is the website for the airline:

Thanks for the info! That actually helps a lot. I didn't really consider flying into Kansas City till now but I'll definately look into it.

How far is the Comfort Inn from KCOM's campus? Does it have internet access?

anyone else care to comment on Kirkesville lodging?

Check out flying into Des Moines, too. It's about a two hour drive.
As far as the Comfort Inn, it is about a ten minute drive to KCOM. They do have free wireless and a decent breakfast and it's near a bunch of familiar places (Ruby Tuesday, Wal-Mart, etc...).

I have driven from St. Louis to Macon (almost to Kirksville) before. It may only be about 3 hours, but it seems like 12 hours. It is almost as boring as driving through Kansas. I was getting "highway hypnotism" big time.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: Once you get close, watch out for Amish crossing. 😀

You know they offer opportunities to stay with a current med student, right? I always like that option best. Staying with student = real scoop on the school (not what the ambassadors are paid to say) and save $$!! Now, isn't that what its all about?

Stephenshu-

I am from Hannibal, Mo right across the river from Quincy, Ill. and have been accepted to KCOM for 2011. Growing up in Missouri I have been up to Kirksville as well as all the way over to Kansas City and down to St. Louis on multiple occassions. The bottom line is that whether you fly into Quincy, Kansas City, or Des Moines the experience will be about the same. All are about 2-2.5 hours worth of of driving on mostly two-lane highway with a lot of farmland for scenery. Bottom Line- I would go with the airport that you can fly into cheapest. I would choose any of those 3 over St. Louis because that is about a 3.5 hour drive. As mbHopper mentioned there is also Kirksville Regional Airport though it will generally cost you significantly more and there are the occassional flight cancellations due to too few bookings.

You probably realize this but if not, Quincy is a very small regional airport. If you do choose to fly into there I would definitely make reservations for a rental care ASAP to ensure that one is available.

You didn't say when your interview is or your plans, but I would make the following recommendation. I would definitaley plan on a flight for the afternoon before your interview is scheduled to get settled in and find your way around. Also, make sure to take plenty of warm clothes. As we say in Missouri, "If you don't like the weather just wait a few hours". It might be 50 degrees the day before your interview and 30 the next.

I hope this helpd. Feel free to send em a private message if you have any questions or want to know any more about the area.
