Anyone in here an Alabama resident or wanting to go to Alabama's state dental school? I am currently a senior at Auburn University, but still have about a year left of dental school pre-reqs. I have my heart set on UAB(University of Alabama at Birmingham), I am wanting to go there more than anything, but through reading the forums in here, I found that it is a pretty competitive southern school to get into. 🙁 My gpa isn't the best in the world-still have plenty of time to bring it up, but I plan on doing really good on the DAT (taking next spring) and I have worked as an ortho assistant for 3 years.

I guess the question I am getting at is whether or not anyone in here knows how tough it is to get in at UAB and whether they favor a better gpa or better dat scores. Also should I even bother applying to other state schools, or just private ones?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I never hear anything about UAB. Thanks! 😀

I am not an Alabama resident, but i did go to Alabama for a little (roll tide!), so i know a bit about UAB dental. It is not extremly hard to get in, i know someone with a 3.4 and 18's that got in last year.

As for where to apply, i would stay away from state school other than your own state if you don't have killer stats. This is because state schools only accept a few out of state people every cycle that have really good stats. The reason being is that the tax payers of that state are the ones that fund the school, so they want to accept as many of those people as possible. Also because residents of that state are more likely to stay there once they graduate.

So, to make a long story short, apply to UAB and privates if your stats are not awesome. Some privates that most people include on their application that are not impossible to get into are NYU, Tufts, Nova, Boston, and Temple. Hope this helps!
