Any artists around?

Are you an art major? You guys are a wacky bunch.

I was an art major
I was going to transfer to MICA or SCAD but decided it might not be the best move so I starting looking into Psych and Psychiatry.

yeah im with the art stuff.

traditional, non-traditional, neo-3d-animation. whatever.

why medicine? because i cant picture myself working at a studio when im 50.

I was an art minor. My dad thought I was an idiot for wanting to do this, and my hardcore premed friends basically thought the same. There were times in studio when I thought it was a useless waste of my time too since the culture is so completely different from the sciences. But in the end, I think that if I had not done this, I wouldn't have been accepted to any of the schools I got into except USUHS (I don't think the military gives a damn about artsy fartsy crap). Two of my interviewers were honestly just interested in art and art history--probably because they were tired of the volunteer work and research stories everyone had (you still need at least the volunteer work though). Bring your portfolio with you to interviews and if your work is any good, your interviewers should be either impressed and intrigued, or just disturbed by your potential for psychosis. Either way you'll be remembered.

yo im totally a writer and a scratch dj artist. i like to draw and paint when i can. pm me to talk artsy

I like to piss my name in the snow, does that count as art?

wow, generallobster! any one else have luck getting into med school being an art major? or minor? or lover?

I didn't major or minor in art, but I always took at least one art, music, or dance class each semester. I couldn't keep up with any particular one, since lab days kept changing. But the point is, I knew I needed it, so I made it fit in somehow. Of course, I've had much less success keeping up with it in med school, I joined one of our a capella groups and I danced last semester, but now as an MSIII, my schedule changes at least every month, so that makes regular anything difficult.

I received my BFA in dance and danced professionally for a few years. Then decided I wanted to go to med school, took post-bac science classes, and am applying for next fall. Let's hope it works!!!🙂 I think as long as you prove you can handle the curriculum of medical school (Science GPA and MCAT), being involved in the arts will help you to stand out.
