Since the 3.2 thread is such a success... I thought I would start this one...

A school told me basically that they essentially throw away your app if any of your GPAs ( Cum, Sci, or BCP) are under 3.0

Now I am a little worried, I should be just over by a tad except the AADSAS uses different numbers for grades then my school... soooo its going to be lower than I hoped.

I just wanted to see if anyone had a BCP lower than 3.0 and got interviews

If so.. including where, and maybe other gpas, a extracurriculars would help!

Thanks!

Very, very, very few people will get in with BCP's under 3.0. There are thousands of applicants who went to class, worked hard and were able to perform better and their work will be more rewarded. Not that you couldn't get in or have some amazing story/situation that makes you a viable candidate. To be given the opportunity to become a dentist is something that you should have to work hard for and sacrifice for....those with such low gpa's will want to do something drastic to improve their candidacy. A masters program, insane DAT score etc...

you can pull it off if your cum is less than 3.0 and thats a stretch...sciences need to be above 3.0 at the min.

but dont give up....take a year of sciences and that gpa will come up.

My Cum and Sci are about a 3.2, and im ok with that... but my BCP is just getting killed by the AADSAS grading scale.. and Im taking a bunch of classes, and I think I should be fine, I was just wondering if there were people out their with low BCPs

not trying to get off topic but how does AADSAS treat grades? Normal scale "A", "B", "C", or do they take into account + and -.

just because someone has under 3.0 gpa either cumm or sci doesn't mean they didn't work hard or didn't sacrifice...some schools are harder than others, some people major in something harder than others, sometimes you make mistakes..

there are people on this very forum who have under 3.0 gpa and have gotten into dental school...get a ridiculous DAT score, volunteer, dental experience

i don't know you and i don't know if you meant your post to be mean, but it came out that way especially cuz im one of those under 3.0 people and i worked my ass off in college - sometimes it just doesn't work

Pretty sure that I acknowledged that there are people on this site and elsewhere who have gotten into school with low GPAs , and who did very well on the DAT or went the extra mile in another way.

Now, I don't know where you went to school...adcoms will take harder universities into consideration when comparing your GPA. What sucks for some who didn't do as well comparatively is that it won't really matter altogether that much (more at some schools than others) how hard you worked or sacrificed. If you worked hard and still performed poorly, then maybe it is an indication of your abilities. I don't say this to be mean and again, everybody has a different situation. It is a fact of life though, not everyone is capable of becoming a doctor. For people who did poorly GPA wise, it is up to them to do something to overcome that deficit...I should know, I had to overcome a poor GPA before getting into school.

fair enough..im picking up what you're putting down..you're right some people aren't supposed to be doctors and post bacc / masters help alot

i get defensive because there are people who think the sub 3.0 category are dumb...

can u share with us which school is it?

I have a BCP of 2.8 overall and I have had an interview and frankly expect at least 1 more.

Then again, my Master's GPA is a 3.6 and I did well on my DATs (AA - 21, TS - 20, PAT - 28)

So some schools will look at the overall application. If you have a low BCP and haven't shown any effort to improve your application, chances are you won't get an invite. However, if you can pull off some good DAT scores (20+ across) and take additional classes showing you can perform well taking graduate-level courses, you have a shot.

I have a cum 3.01 gpa.. and BCP 2.75 and have 1 interview so far. I got a TS22 AA20 PAT17

Wow, the health committee at my school said they will not process/accept anyone with a BCP below 3.0. Did you just go straight through aadsas?

The interview i got was from my state school. Other than that i haven't gotten anymore yet. Im sure state schools tend to be more lenient.

I currently have a 2.872 overall gpa. I'm enrolling for a 2nd baccalaureate biology post-bac program at Cal State L.A. for Jan '08. I've been told by numerous dental school that this is the way to go for me (pretty much to kiss ass in either a year-long post-bac or masters program in the sciences). But when I did the math, it seems as though a post-bac (4 quarters worth, 3-4 classes per quarter, with all straight A's) would only get my gpa to a ~3.0 range (since I've already taken so many units at my UC undergrad).

Does anyone know if dental schools take into consideration a significant improvement between performance in ugrad and a post-bac/masters? Or do they only look to see what your overall gpa comes out to be at the end of all the schooling?

to be fair, they'll look at both. of course we'll never know "the formula" of adcoms. regardless, as has been said on here before, as long as you have some drastic improvement in further classes, a masters, DATs, more shadowing, extracurriculars, etc., you should be golden (i'm in this boat👍)

That's going to be my MO for next year's application as well. I'll have a masters in biomed sciences by next January, so hopefully that'll give a bit of a boost as a reapplicant.

^didnt you have like a 26/25/30 DAT? lol what are you worried about?

If I would have applied for last cycle it would have been with a 2.95 BCP, and that included a significant amount of science courses. Between then and this application cycle I raised my BCP to a 3.17. In most of my interviews we've discussed the upward trend in my science grades and they have been pretty positive discussions.

If you have a low GPA you need to work hard to raise it as much as you can. Your hard work will reflect your motivation, dedication and ability to succeed in dental school and I think that ADCOMS will take that into account.

I received another invitation for an interview at Temple University today. Keep the hope alive.

awesome do you have a lot of ECs or anything? I mean you have great DAT score, so thats also a plus!

I don't know if i have excellent EC compared to the rest of you..I have always been in a few clubs or organizations as vice president...or treasure.. not just a member. I have always been involved in the community.. But i don't think that outweights my low gpa.

They might like personal statement 😉

I have a 2.98 sci gpa due to a terrible sci gpa during my Mech Engineering undergrad ten years ago. Since then, I got a M.S. in Mech Eng from UMich with a 3.45 and a post-bacc B.S. in Bio from Northwestern with a 3.3 and DAT of 21/21/21. My BCP is 3.0.

So far, I have two interviews (UIC & UMich) and two rejections (UCSF & Harvard). UCSF is an automatic rejection if the sci gpa is below 3.0. I have applied to 13 schools.

It is so freaking hard to overcome a few slacker years during under-grad. Oh well, if only there was a time machine.....

I'm hoping that my current semester at UIC (taking more Bio classes) will finally get my Sci gpa to 3.0.....maybe the ADCOMMS will notice this on my AADSAS update....

Its unclear wheather what will get you in or not. What i do know is that my BCP was above 3.5 and yet i still got rejected by temple and maryland, but i got interviews at Stony Brooke and UMDNJ(my top choice). your DAT score matters alot. As for me I had an AA of 19 but my bio i got a 16. so that is prolly why i got rejected by those schools so quickly. However at the UMDNJ interview they say that your BCP and science gpa were the two most importnat factors into getting in. However i feel that what school u go to matters as well. If you go to an ivy league school a 3.0 in BCp actually quite good.

How do I find out what my overall and science GPA is? I have a ADEA account, but I am not applying this for the next two application cycles. I plan on using this time to do post-bacc/graduate work.

Do you mean aadsas account? If you want to know what your aadsas gpa would be, you pretty much have to submit your transcript to aadsas. Your overall shouldn't be too much changed, unless you retook classes. (For retakes average the good and the bad grade) science just counts science classes and BCP classes..., obviously. You should be able to get a pretty good estimate on your own though.

Just curious if anybody on this thread got in......

Thanks

My BCP is under a 3.0 and I got into Louisville(my state school) yesterday after 4 years of applying and a 2 year Master's degree during that span.

It's not easy, but it can be done.

Thats awesome! Good luck and have a great future....

is it common for someone to have overall GPA ~3.0 with sci GPA ~2.80 and alright DAT scores? Lets say this individual had only a few terrible courses, but has also had very high marks in a lot of courses later on in university (upward trend), would this be kept in consideration?

I would like to think it does. During most, if not all my interviews the interviewers have mentioned my upward trend in college and I believe that made a difference in my application.

I was a slacker during the first 2 years of college. I got a C- in Chem, F in math, retook it and got a C, C+ in general bio, D+ in Chinese, C+ in statistics, C in English and NP in Linguistics.

I just tried really hard the last two years.

wow this gives me hope. Yea, my 1st two years were terrible. I was living on my own and had to learn how to cook, pay the bills etc etc.. was way to busy with learning the rules of life at 17. For the last two years I have had ~A average (89%). Although I have had a few D's and C's myself, it has been A's for the longest time now. It is just very upsetting when the overall gpa of ~ 2.8 in science and ~ 3.0 overall comes up. I really dont think this is reflective of my capabilities. I was immature... what else can I say.

I really wouldnt know what else to do after this year if I dont make it into dental school. I am from Canada and I have had in mind to come to the States for as long as I can remember. Have you heard about any programs that will give you better odds of getting into dental school? I am in my last year and the last thing I want is to be doing nothing!!! I have looked into Boston's gms program and the program at Barry, but I am not sure if this is a good temp backup plan. I am really lost.

If anyone has been in a similar situation as well, what did you do?

I just got accepted to UIC yesterday. My undergrad transcript (B.S. Mech Eng) has one F, one D, and a ton of C's. As a result, I graduated with a 2.9 overall, with a sci gpa of around 2.7.

But, I did manage to later get a M.S. in Mech Eng with a 3.45, but I then reallized that D schools didn't really care about this degree since it isn't Bio and chem related.

Then in 2005, I started my Bio post-bacc. I got a few C's during my first year. As a result, I didn't get into D-school my first attempt in 2006.

I kept taking more upper level Bio classes, getting all A's and B's, eventually finishing the Bio degree.

Because my grades suck, I studied like hell for the DAT to make sure I scored high. I knew that if I didn't rock the DAT, I had no chance of getting into D-school. I scored 21/21/21.

If you keep trying and eventually do well, some schools will notice and give you slack. What sucks is that your past performance will hold you back, forever making you "borderline". But, all you need is one acceptance.

"What sucks is that your past performance will hold you back, forever making you "borderline"." this is exactly what I am always worried about. That is why I think it is great that more than just GPA is considered.

Some people have it easier in life than other, but in the end I like to belive that if you keep working hard, eventually the door will open somewhere.

Thanks for the post!

Just thought i would keep the hope alive... I got another interview from NYU.

wow man your getting hella alot of interviews with ur BCP. Did u go to a pretty big school? either that or your personal statement really moved the schools

I'm in a similar state. I graduated with a math degree in 1998 with a 2.5. I've put in roughly 70 hours @ 4.0 since, bringing my cum to 3.07, sci to 3.2, and BCP to 3.77.

Nothing serious, I went UF. Before that, I went to Community College.
