any books to help prep for interviews?

I have a lotta down time this summer to read. I'm not talking about books that help prepare you for interviews in general, but medicine related books on things like ethics/US healthcare system. I feel having a good understanding of these topics could prove very valuable in interview conversation, as opposed to just having a canned answer that you practiced b/c you knew the question would be asked from SDN interview feedback. any thoughts from med students or reapplicants appreciated.

Rarely (but not unheard of) will they ask you some serious ethics/trick question unless you steer the convo that way.

Definitely know something about the healthcare debate / reform. That being said, hopefully you know a thing or two if you're applying to enter this profession.

It helped me to have a conversation with my cousin who is a primary care physician where he gave a list of his pros and cons of healthcare and forced me to come up with beliefs and justifications for both sides on the spot. "it's not a right if...well if you say that, it's not a right blah blah blah". He also explained to me what he does everyday and how different practices work and how they bill to make up for "lost causes (financially speaking)". If you know anyone that is a physician that you're close with, you can talk to them about issues going on right now.

I would suggest reading up on articles on a lot of different issues relating to medicine. In the US, there are numerous issues going on, and obviously the most important one that faces us right now is healthcare reform. Know what the bill entails (the main ideas...not EVERYTHING, since no one really knows) and the potential ramifications of those changes.

I recommend Essentials of the U.S. Health Care System by Leiyu Shi and Douglas A. Singh. It's a pretty good read to get some insight into the system. I have the second edition though, and it doesn't really address any recent reform. Hopefully there's a more recent edition out. If not, I suggest reading up on Wikipedia. I love Wikipedia. 😍

In Canada, people generally read an ethics book called "Doing Right". It's an easy read and most Canadian healthcare laws should carry over to USA, with the exception of euthanasia or physician assisted suicide.
