Hi all,

I’m Canadian (not a dual citizen) and I’m going to a US public med school this summer. I would really appreciate it if you guys don’t mind helping me on these questions:

1. I’m assuming that all research are going to be volunteer type. However, in regards to the 1st year summer, is there any chance for a Canadian to secure a funded/paid research position in a public American school? What is the best strategy to secure a summer research position as a Canadian?

2. I’m also thinking about applying for American citizenship in the future. Has anyone here had any success in getting the US citizenship, and if so, what’s the process like? What’s the pros and cons of having a dual-citizenship (eg. tax)?

Thank you very much in advance.

2.
what do you mean "applying" for citizenship? Are you on a green card already?

edit, to answer question#1.
Paid research at public institutions is somewhat hard to acquire, as basic science funding has been lacking in recent years. The key would be perseverance in applying for any open positions, and networking to find opening in labs (ask around if any PIs have funding). Some people start off as volunteers, and as they are trained and have proved themselves capable of generating publication-quality data, they may be offered a paid position.

I missed the part where you're a med student, you should ask this in the allopathic forum.
