I am a student here in Canada, and am looking into Psyd programs in the USA, as there are only 2 in Canada, both of which are French. Are there any fellow Canadian's in here who have gone to the USA to do a Psyd?

The reason I am looking into the Psyd programs vs the Phd is because I want to be more of a "counsellor" rather than a "researcher". As well, as far as I can tell thus far, the Phd programs in psychology here in canada take very few students (some as low as 4 or 5).

Also, anyone know anything about online programs, such as Royorkan (not sure of the spelling!!)??

Thanks:luck:

Hey 😀

I'm Canadian, but I'm applying to Ph.D programs up here and in the states. I don't know much about the Psy.D. Sorry.

I was curious, so checked out the webpage:

http://www.ryokan.edu/

Sounds kinda sketchy if you ask me... says you can get a PsyD in 2 years if you already have a masters degree. Admission requirements are almost non-existent (just a phone interview). Aside from the obvious lack of training and program reputation, I wonder if state/provincial regulatory bodies would even recognize this degree.

I'd love to hear others' comments

You've probably already been through this, but just in case-- If you're interested in counselling rather than research and would like to stay in Canada, you may want to look into Counselling Psych programs (generally housed in faculties of Education) or into Marriage and Family Therapy programs (UGuelph, etc.)

I know almost nothing about applying to Psy.D. programs in the States; I'm applying exclusively to Ph.D. programs in Canada. Sorry. 🙁

Good luck with selecting programs and with applications! 🙂

Funny, I am looking for PhD programs in your country, and you are looking for PsyDs in mine. Where are you in Canada, geographically speaking? If you want to know about all of the PsyD programs that are APA acredited in the US, you can look them up on the APA website. There are lots and lots. Some are housed within university departments, some are housed in university professional schools, and some are independent institutions like Alliant and Argosy (that have many locations throughout the US). The professional, independent Psy D programs typically have the least restrictive requirements for admission. There are a handful of PsyD programs housed within unveristy departments that are highly regarded, Rutgers and Pepperdine come to mind. Most of the books printed about clinical psychology programs in the US include both the PhD and PsyD schools. Hope this helps!

Hey, just out of curiosity, what made you look at PhD programs in Canada?

I'm in Winnipeg, I go to the U of M. 🙂

I wondered if maybe you were a little closer to the West Coast, I applied to Pacific University in Oregon, it's in a small town about 40 minutes out of Portland. I work with a psychologist who got her degree there. She didn't particularly care for the program, but after thorough review of their program on my own, I kinda thought they had some really great faculty members and some good opportunities. I loved the Pepperdine PsyD, they have a lot of people with child-clinical interests, but I wasn't really thrilled about applying for PsyDs out of state. If you're willing to travel, they could both be good options.

I applied to the Canadian schools kind of randomly- my clincial supervisor asked me if I'd ever thought about UBC because he had a friend who went there. I looked into UBC last year, and applied to it, UVIC and Simon Fraser this year. They're all much closer to my home than most of the US programs I applied to, and they all had fewer total applicants. They also have excellent funding. I thought a lot of the Canadian schools were great! It's hard to say no to dual accreditation as well! It's kind of a well-kept secret (the Canadian schools), in my opinion, with clinical applicants- a lot of people down here never give Canada a glance. Good luck with your PsyD search!

🙂 I applied to UBC and SFU too! So let me know if you hear anything and I'll let you know too.

Hey Canadians! Do you by any chance know if York and OISE have extended invites yet and if they haven't, do you know when they plan to? Thanks!

No idea. All I know is that Canadian Universities tend to meet later than American ones, so their responses go out later too I'm assuming. Sorry I'm no help. lol

I know that most of the Canadian schools had deadlines less than a month ago...but I am starting to get curious about interview invites...anyone heard a thing from UBC, UVic, or Simon Fraser? Does anyone know their regular schedule of inviting or anything like that? I only received a rejection letter from UBC on April 7th last year...I didn't know anyone else who had applied there, and I had not yet discovered the forum. Just wondering if anyone out there is wiser than I...

No word from UBC or SFU. They probably won't say anything until about April, I'm not even sure if they do interviews... a lot of canadian universities don't.

I applied to 6 Canadian schools and haven't heard a word from any of them. Most though are in Ontario...

I didn't realize that some Canadian schools don't interview. That seems really bizarre to me. You could look good on paper but be a complete nutter in real life!

On the SFU website:

"Clinical Applicants: Please note interview dates are February 19th and 20th, 2007"

On the UBC website:

"Files will be reviewed starting in mid-December with early decisions made by mid-January. We will attempt to notify all applicants of our decision by April 1st." - no mention of interviews.

UVic states that they have interviews, but doesn't say when.

Hope this helps.

Crap! I just went to SFU's website and saw the same message. I guess I am cutting it a little close to be hearing about an interview, huh? Oh well. Thanks, WaitingKills, that was nice of you to offer the info! The fit was better with UVic and UBC anyhow. Thanks again for the update.

Hey, you live in Portland? I'm planning on applying to Pacific University (among others), but I'm a little nervous about applying to U.S. schools because I don't know what kind of reputations certain schools have or what the areas are like. What's Portland like? Would you recommend Pacific University? Does it have a decent reputation in terms of its Clinical PsyD program?

Yeah, I have kind written out that school now, and am more interested now in staying near the north-east coast of the US as I am from newfoundland. Another thing that worries me is the high tuition cost for out-of-state students. Does anyone know of any programs that are less costly in the N-E states?

I am currently completed my masters in Counselling Psych, and in NFLD the golden-standard is the doctorate.

Hey. I've applied to a few clinical Ph.D's in the NE States (I'm from BC) and all of them offer fee remission of 1/3 in state when you take a research/teaching assistanship (which everyone is offered at the schools I looked into/applied for). It works out to about $5000-$6000 a year American including health insurance which one school quoted me at $1400 US.

I don't know if the same is true for counselling programs, but if it is, it's not that much more than studying in Canada I believe.

I'm applying to all grad schools in Canada. I've got a few updates recently by callin up advisors at some of the schools and annoying them. I swear they don't understand what it feels like waking up everyday waiting for the email that determines you future. Anyway here's what I've learnt:

Guelph- If you haven't been called for an interview, cross them off your list. They did interviews early this month and are sending out offers. BOOO

Uvic- You should hear within 3-4 weeks if you got in. Apparently no interviews.

OISE- The grad office is sayin you'll hear something in April but I annoyed the program coordinator who said they'll be contacting shortlisted ppl within the next 10 days.

Hope that helps someone 🙂

Thanks Psychreka, that's definitely helpful to know about OISE. Now I just have to wonder about York!🙂

I did email someone at York and they replied saying that they're now weeding through applications so that will take a few more weeks.

Are you applying to the SCCP program at OISE?

Thanks for that!

By any chance did you contact Windsor, Concordia, Manitoba or Western Ontario?

I called a few weeks ago and they all said that it was to early to say anything...

I feel really dumb for not knowing about OISE! I've lived in Canada my who life and haven't heard of it. Looking at the website, I totally would have applied. That sucks!

Did anyone apply to Regina?

I go to Manitoba. 🙂 Who's your POI?

It'll probably be a long time before you hear about U of M, from what my advisor tells me, they do things pretty slowly.

Thanks for the info on York psychreka!

Yeah, I applied to the SCCP program at OISE. Did you too?

Yea I did. That's actually my first choice program. Who did you put as your POI there?

I realise I'm becoming quite addicted to this forum lol.

Fedexed off an application to U of Regina today also. Praying for acceptances.

I posted this on the official interview thread too but I just wanted to let those interested in OISE know that the invites have started. I just got an email from my POI to schedule a phone interview. Good luck!

Fellow Canadian here, and new to the forum so thought I'd say hi! Good luck to my fellow canucks (and, of course, to our friends south of the border)!

Congrats on your news. Great to hear that the process has begun. My stomach is churning like crazy now. I am sooooo nervous. This is my top school that I'm really counting on 🙁 So they better be calling.

Is this definitely true about Guelph? Just wondering if anyone else has heard anything. I talked to someone there about a week ago who said my file was still under review. Maybe that was just a polite way of not commenting on my status?

I know Guelph has already conducted their big interview day at the start of Feb (one of my friend's applied), and made admission decisions by mid-Feb. I don't know how their process works though, so it's possible that they do more than 1 round of interviews.

Thanks a lot for that info! I guess I'll just have to keep waiting and hoping for the best--I haven't heard from any of my schools yet.

I applied to Guelph too and haven't heard a word. I have applied to 6 Canadian schools actually, and haven't heard a peep from any of them. I do know though, from another girl on this site, that Western Ontario has started interviewing a few weeks back.

It's weird that a lot of schools here don't interview. I'd actually appreciate the opportunity to go to the schools and meet my POI's before having to accept offers (that is if I get offers - trying to keep positive!).

No worries dude. Hope ya hear back (with some positive news) from some of your schools soon!!! I knew some folks last year that applied to Canadian progs last year and literally didn't hear back until April, when they were offered admission.

Admissions without interviews? Seriously? That's interesting… Were these for clinical programs?

I love this board-- It's nice to feel like I'm not in this alone, and to see that other people are just as obsessive as I am. I applied to three Ontario clinical programs, and so far have heard from only one (UWO; I have a second interview in-person on Wednesday.)

Yep, clinical! Isn't that rediculous!

Good luck with your second interview. I was wondering how it was going for you.

This was just posted on the University of Windsor's website today... I don't know if anyone else has applied there.

"Applicants for Fall 2007:

Recommendation for Graduate admissions for September 2007 will be forwarded to the Graduate Dean on March 8, 2007. Applicants will be notified of their status shortly after that date."

Just thought I'd post that I was talking to my advisor today (at the U of Manitoba) and she mentioned that they haven't finalized any decisions yet so if you're waiting on it there's still hope. 🙂

Sorry to focus on the neg, but wondering if anyone has gotten any rejections from any of the Ontario schools yet?

No rejections from Ontario schools yet.

Has anyone heard from York yet? It seems really late, I wonder if they've already extended invites.

Ok kids... As of tomorrow, there is only one month left until the programs have to send out notices of either rejections or acceptances.

I'm getting quite bitter that the Canadian schools, who are not interviewing, are dragging this process out till the bitter end. Seriously, who needs three months to go through applications?!

I can't wait till this is over.

With that being said, I obviously haven't heard from anyone, including the Ontario schools.
