Hi,

Currently I have a 3.1-.2cGPA and 3.0sGPA with grade replacements. I've taken the mcat twice but had a lot of family issues both times when I took the mcat resulting a 13 and then 19 (7pts below what I was averaging on AAMC tests) the second time around. I am going to retake the mcat but not until I am fully ready and averaging extremely high. I've also been accepted into a post bacc program which most likely I will be attending.

I have a lot of medical experience ranging from scribing, volunteering, shadowing, and being medical receptionist. I have done a semester worth of research (nothing crazy though).

I really would like to apply to DO schools, if possible, this upcoming cycle but am not sure whether I would stand a chance at all with my stats or even what schools I should consider. I know I don't stand a chance at "high tier" med schools.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Accepted to post-bacc? Do you mean a SMP? Without offense, I am a bit surprised an SmP accepted a mcat score of 19. Nonetheless if you are In one, congratulations and do make the best of that. Concur with above especially with mcat retake. If u do super on this smp, you may not need to change ur Gpa at all

No offense taken but yes I did get into an SMP. I had really good recommendation letters and my ECs are pretty good. As for my academics, I have had a good upward trend but my one bad year led me to have the GPA I currently have (a lot of C/D/F). Thank you for the advice!

Congrats on getting into a SMP. Unless there is a linkage in the program, you will likely need to retake the MCAT. Keep in mind that there is a lot riding on your SMP performance, so it is likely not advisable to retake the MCAT while you're concurrently taking medical school courses.

Honestly, the easiest route seems to be: Study for the MCAT this summer, and rock it before you start the SMP. Do very well in the SMP. Then apply early and broadly to DO schools next cycle (for the class entering in 2017).

If you do well on the MCAT (506+) then you may not even need the SMP. You could just do a year of retakes etc. at your local university, and then apply next year. Just something to consider.

Either way, do not apply to schools that average MCAT scores.

The lowest current averages for a DO school are a 23 MCAT and a 3.3ish GPA, and that is far below the overall average for DO schools. If I were you, I'd forget about applying this cycle and build yourself a respectable application stat-wise before I'd consider applying. This is because it's almost always harder to get in as a re-applicant than it is your first time.

Do the SMP, get yourself a 3.7+ GPA and an MCAT of 26+ (or whatever the new equivalent of that will be, I think 502ish). You screwed up pretty big with undergrad and your stats seem to indicate you were barely able to handle undergrad. Since medical school is significantly more difficult , you're going to need to prove that you're capable of handling it. Best of luck in the SMP and don't apply to med school until you are sure you'll have a decent shot otherwise you'll be sabotaging yourself for the future.
