Ever since I have decided to pursue medicine (a few months ago) I have been very excited about finding my passion and finally figuring out what I want to do with the rest of my life, but whenever I talk to students in medical schools and some of my friends who include some doctors they keep telling me that I can't recover from my GPA and that no DO school would accept me. Some background on me: I am a computer science and Engineering student at OSU who will be graduating this upcoming spring and my cGPA is 3.05 (hoping to raise it up to 3.1 by graduation). I have taken a few pre med courses before deciding to pursue medicine (unintentionally since they counted towards my engineering major) and I averaged a B- in them (again I wasn't planning on going to medical school when I took those classes). My plan now was to finish my premed classes after graduation and take the MCAT. It's just surprising that so many people would say that to me, and I wanted to see if any of you guys have went through this or have any advice? thanks a lot!

The best part about AACOMAS is grade replacement. Technically, you can repeat classes as many times as you want until you get a 4.0. (In reality, repeating multiple times will bring up other issues, but you'll still have a 4.0.)

Since you say you averaged a B-, I imagine that you got C+ or lower in a bunch of courses. Repeat those. Get As. Your GPA will skyrocket. Problem solved.

You should check out this years underdog thread 🙂. If you rock your MCAT it'll be much easier. But I definitely would not say it's impossible. Several people with lower GPAs have been accepted already and it's still early in the cycle. Keep working hard and you'll get there 🙂

Follow the train of advice of the previous users. This will lead this to your dream. And remember one thing, resistance. The ability to resist the nay sayers and having the guts to say, this is what I want and I'm willing to die for it.

GL! 😀

Try your best, but I don't know about dying for med school...

I would recommend you enjoy the benefits of grade replacement for a year to boost your GPA. Also, rock your MCAT. I had a 3.2cGPA/3.1sGPA and got accepted 🙂

FOCUS ON THE MCAT NOW!!

If you can pull of a great MCAT, then you'll have plenty of interviews and at that point the rest is up to you!

Study study study and good luck!

During your off time (when you're not rocking A's in prereqs) work on a good PS and get a variety of shadowing experiences with those doc friends. Any DOs in that group? Since your decision is fairly recent I'm sure there's a good story behind it rather than a craving for money or prestige sort of thing.

What would be wrong with that?
