Sure there's a thread on this but couldn't find. Currently PGY1 FP and considering EM. For the 4 year programs could this PGY-1 year be accepted ? and for the 3 year programs, could any credits be transferred or start from scratch ?
Also, I don't have an EM LOR. Will this be serious hindrance ? thanks

yes...

Did you do a month in EM in your FM year?

People will question your comittment to EM with no rotation.

Good luck in the process.

i have a buddy that did this and, after a lot of work, uncertainty and luck is now in a 1-3 EM program. he was EM vs FM until oct of 4th year, so he did have some EM in med school and also during his intern year; this was likely a contributing factor in his application (he did not apply through match, which probably made it harder for him to land a spot). a few of his FM rotations applied (OB, ward medicine). hope this helps. good luck.

No EM in med-school or intern year. EM rotation required and elective, only offered in 2nd year in my program. I figured it would be a flag but hoped that PD's would understand that after doing a year of FP I would know what I wanted now. Thanks

You might be able to get into a PGY2-4 program, but generally if you go to a 1-3 program you won't get credit for your intern year, but you might get "opted" out of some rotations, like maybe OBGYN or wards or something.

The #1 thing people are going to ask you on your interview and in your app is "why" so make sure you have a good real reason.

Good luck!

i think it will be tough for you to get into an EM program without ever having done an EM rotation. not only will you not have an EM LOR (as you pointed out) but it will be tough to convincingly justify why you want to do EM if you've never actually done EM. being unhappy in FM might mean that you don't like FM, but i don't think it necessarily implies that you'll be happy in EM.

can't you volunteer in an ED for a couple of shifts? That way you could get to know people and also get some experience to decide if you like it. I may just be a med student, but Hawkeye is right - just 'cause you don't like strawberry doesn't mean you automatically love chocolate. 👍

or, maybe a better analogy would be deciding you like ob/gyn because you like treating female patients in outpt IM - there is a whole world you are not seeing.
