I have a GPA of about 3.0, but if I score like a 30 on the MCAT would I still have a reasonable shot of getting in to Med school??
Or should I start getting ready to: (a)get ready to take a year or 2 of grad school, or (b)start packing my bags to head down to the Carribean??

itd be very overwhelmingly difficult to get into US MD schools with a 3.0 gpa.

a) DO or Carribean
b) postbacc or grad school

Someone will come and tell you to apply anyway. They are full of it.
Try DO, or go caribean. Personally i would either try Do or like you said do two years of grad school.

If you made a 30 witha crappy 3.0 gpa it means you are lazy and smart. Get diciplined for two years and you will get into an allopathic school. But if you are not sensitive i would do DO.

Does anyone think it matters where the OP goes to school/what major he was? If you are a CA state resident I would think it difficult to get into schools with those scores but if you are from Iowa or something (do they even have a med school?) it might be feasible. If you were an engineer at a top school that 3.0 is better than if you were a bio major at a top school. Things to consider i guess, but dont waste too much $ applying to the top 20-30 schools; while they want well-rounded they seem to also be number ******...

exactly, how easy are carreabean school to get in? Can some one give em approximate #? From the sentiment on this board, it almost looks like anyone can get in there.

Also what are the disadavantages? Are you not US certified MD after graduating from those schools? Is it harder to get residencies?

Your GPA will definately work against you, but you can swing a few interviews if you can do extremely well on your MCAT's (36+). While having a good GPA and MCAT is best, it's easier have success with a high MCAT and low GPA than with a high GPA and a low MCAT. You'll still need to work some magic in your essays and interviews, but rock the MCAT and you have a fair enough chance.

You cannot get in w/ a 3.0/30 especially if you take your mcat in august.

Sorry. There's always a shot in hell... but you asked if you had a reasonable chance. A 3.0/30... you do not.

If you get good recommendations and perhaps some volunteer experience, you do have a shot. However, the number of applicants to med school is on the rise again.

I had a 3.4/30 and only got one interview... and a rejection. However, if you don't want to spend two years in grad school you can do a one year masters program such as those at Georgetown and Drexel.

I believe BU has a 1-year master's program also.

If your a FL resisdent you have a good shot! Apply to MD schools and don't listen to these pessimistic people!

people here dont really seem to know what they're talking about. i know someone who got an interview at an MD school with a GPA lower than yours and an MCAT below 30. granted, we're not talking about the best location, but it can be done. my advice? don't bother with Harvard, but definitely apply to some state schools, or some less competitive schools, as well as some DO or Carribbean schools. it probably wouldn't hurt to apply to a post bac or grad program to have a back up. but definitely apply- you dont want to waste a year if you dont have to. pm me if you want more specifics 🙂

The thing is, you know one person that got in. And I'm sure you know a lot more people who got in, meaning odds are extremely bad. To the OP. Yes, it is possible, but it is not reasonable to expect to get into an allo school w/ a 30/3.0 Deffinitely apply to a few allopathics and try anyway, but your expectations should be for osteopathic and carribean schools. You'll get a good education there, so no reason to fret about them being subpar or anything like that. a doctor's a doctor. you get good and bad doctors from Harvard, you get good and bad doctors who are FMG's.

But if for some reason you have your heart more set on a US allopathic school than just on becoming a doctor, take time off, do a graduate program.

There is much more to being a doctor than numbers, and it's not something you can teach someone. Let your application sell itself and see where it takes you if you really really want it.

As for the caribbean, I know two people who went there recently: One with no degree (but a 4.0 GPA that he got by taking one class at a time) and a 27 MCAT, and the other with a 2.8 GPA, a couple C's in baby O-Chem (it was the only class he was taking) and a 19 on his MCAT. Basically, the caribbean will take you if you want to be $300K in debt after a few years. It's a Dutch colony so you can't work, you can't own property, and a one bedrom apartment 10 minutes from campus will cost you about $1000/month to rent, utilities extra.

There is a slight chance you may be able to get in.

However, I think you should do a master's or postbac program with intense science and do very well in it. Which is possible if you are focussed and work really hard at it.

Then apply to med school.

Also, and the application depends on what other factors you have like work, extracurriculars etc. etc.

So remember to take everything into account
