This question is for the students currently in optometry school. Do you have to dissect anything (e.g. an eyeball) in school? I am not a big fan of dissections. 🙁 Thanks.

If you're not a fan of dissections, you may want to reconsider any health field. But to answer your question, when I was in school we took over the cadavers after the students in the med school down the street were done with them. We then did some more in depth disections of the area around the eye.

our cadavers were pre-dissected, but you did have to glove up and move things to see everything (because obviously you will be tested on it)

Don't worry about reconsidering optometry if you don't like dissection. You can be a fantastic OD and not have ever done any work on a cadaver. Just look at me! In my scholastic career all I've ever dissected was a worm and a frog in grade seven, a cat and a 'dog-fish' in undergrad, and a bovine eye in optometry school. You'll do fine.

Just ask the optometry schools you are applying to what type of dissections they do if it really is that big of a concern for you.

SUNY does the same thing as UHCO -- we examine pre-dissected cadavers -- plus do some dissections of cow and/or sheep eyes. It's no biggie.

One thing you will have to do is stuff involving eye contact -- everting eyelids, contact tonometry (for taking eye pressures -- IOPs), foreign body removal (though I don't know how involved that is, haven't done it yet), and gonio lens applanation (where you place a handheld lens directly on the eye with a gel interface). These things aren't a big deal, but I only mention them because I know some people who have dissection issues who are a little ooked out by these procedures.

Mdtpham asked a good question. I thought there would be no dissections in optometry school, but apparently not.

I had done dissections while in hs and undergrad and I was pretty good at it too, but when it comes to cadavers, it's going to freak me out. Dissecting dead people seems pretty scary to me.

foreign body removal scary the first time you do it.... after it's over you wonder what you were worrying about 😉

I hated it first year when a prof would put a disease picture on the screen and say if you are squeamish look away...and people would actually look away. That kind of thing is something you really need to get over. ODs in some states are doing injections, if you can't handle that you will be left behind like the docs that never got TPA certified.

yeah... I don't really wanna look at Neisseria infections of the eyball... but I do need to know what they look like. try not to turn your head in lecture.. as nasty as it is.. you WILL see these patients.

at scco, we do pig heart dissection and eventually cow eye dissection

Deleted.

I believe there are eyeball disections in opt school.
