I am an MSIII trying to figure it all out. I am interested in OB-Gyn and the pacific NW. I called both schools and they said everything I wanted to hear (yes, we take COMLEX, yes, we take DOs), but I have a feeling I am just kidding myself, considering neither program has any DOs currently (as far as I can tell), and both are very competitive regardless of the degree. Any experiences/thoughts?

Hi,

just do well on the rest of your third year -- especially in OBGYN elective. If you really like those two schools -- consider an away rotation there in your 4th year.
get involved in other activities -- and maybe a little bit of research.
apply broadly and take it from there.
Just don't give up or think something can't happen b/c of this or that. 🙂!
good luck

I don't know that much about UW, but OHSU is a program that really does look at the whole person when selecting their residents. They are looking for leaders who are committed to being advocates for women's health. The residents are awesome, strong individuals, as are a majority of the faculty. They are not looking for cookie cutter AOA applicants who aced their boards, if they do not have the personality to back it up. They took their first IMG this year and she is incredible. I would definetly suggest doing an away rotation there early. The perinatology rotation has the most exposure to the residents and staff, although you do get exposure with the REI (they will usually have you spend Fridays on the hill with the option to take call if you want to). I guess you won't know unless you try. Good luck.
