Anyone here a former smokeless tobacco user? I'm in the process of quitting and it's REALLY hard. It's really embarrassing that I want to be a Dentist and I have a habit that is extremely bad for your oral health, it's borderline hypocritical actually... over the past 4 months I've gone from an every day dipper to a once or twice a week guy, and cravings aren't as bad as they used to be. Hopefully by summer I will have completely kicked the habit. If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it...

I am very confused by anyone that uses tobacco and wants to go into any form of healthcare. But, I think the pictures will do it for you.
BTW armorshell that was almost right on que.
 
Cold Turkey is the only way. I had a tough time at first but after a while it starts to get better. And after you havent done it in a while the thought of it starts to make you sick to think about, and then you kow you are over it. Its definately worth quitting aside from the obvious reasons from the pictures above, because you save so much money.
 
Is there a such thing as Dipper's Anonymous?!? haha. I think that would be a solid support system. And hey, if there isnt, maybe you could create one....it would look great on your application! :idea:

The guy in the picture looks familiar. If only they hadn't blocked out his eyes I might be able to make a positive ID.

started in High School to lose weight for wrestling, than used it in the military. It helped to stay awake for those all night guard duty posts. The best way to quit is to go cold turkey and implement an extreme physical fitness routine. For me it was to run. Those first couple of days I went to the track sometimes three times a day and just ran. Thats the kind of commitment it takes to quit.
 
20 Seconds trying a friend's Copenhagen doesn't really count as being a former dipper, but I did smoke cigarettes for many years. I haven't had one in over 3 years now and don't miss it at all. The physical component to tobacco addiction only lasts a few days and the rest is psychological, so you can absolutely get control over it. In my opinion, there are 2 important attitudes toward tobacco that you need to acquire to be really successful.

1. Don't think about quitting as "giving it up". It's a nasty, expensive habit that you should be glad to get rid of. As long as you feel like you're missing out on something by not chewing, you run the risk of doing it again.
2. You have to make a mental disconnect from it. Tobacco has a lot of craving triggers. You have to be able to diminish their hold over you. You accomplish this by not allowing yourself to think about dipping when you encounter your triggers for tobacco craving. Intentionally direct your mind to other things and it will become automatic after a while. Seeing other people smoke was always a trigger for me. My husband still smoked for a year after I quit and I realized that if I were to be successful, I could no longer have a mental association with it- I had to feel complete apathy towards tobacco.

I hope this helps you in some way. I know how powerful tobacco addiction can be, but you can absolutely overcome it. Wish you the best of luck with it!

Everyone's unhealthy is one way or another... and some can't help it if they grew up around something, or developed unhealthy habits when they were young and dumb.

It looks like Joe Garagiola. He does a lot of work with baseball teams to talk about dipping.
 
It's not just bad for your oral health... I'm sure you know. It's damage can be very far reaching in terms of a variety of organs. I think it is the most repulsive habit around... even worse than smoking. People look horrible doing it. It is very unattractive etc... that said, I know some dental students that still haven't been able to kick the habit. I hope you are more successful.

At least you don't have to be breathing in any second-hand smoke. The worse that could happen is you could step in someones spit.:d
