Any exceptions for old prereqs? (Especially for U of Maryland)

2 part question:

I just found out that I needed to have taken my prereqs for U of Maryland FIVE YEARS prior to admissions. This is the school I would really like to attend, but if they are strictly adhering to this rule, then I am completely out of the running.

I graduated in 1997 with a bio degree. I got As in every single prereq class. I have worked in a biochem/molecular bio lab for several years. I also have a master's in molecular bio which includes biochem courses. I don't think I should have to take these courses AGAIN.

First part: Has anyone been able to get out of this ridiculous requirement?

2nd part: Are there other schools who do the same?

Please help! I don't want to take undergrad organic again. . once was enough!

About half my prereqs are more than 5 years old, the other half were covered under my degree I just finished in August. Some of the older ones were also AP credit. My school of choice, though they also require more current prereqs and they specifically DON'T accept AP credits, confirmed that I was good to go. No need to retake because the BS degree (Biochemistry) sort of covered it. (example- they weren't going to make me retake Bio I and II which were AP credits from 10 years ago, because I just took Bio III two years ago as part of this degree.) Sounds like your situation is similar.

But I had to get this info from direct communication with the dean of the school. I suggest you do the same. Call or write the dean of the school and present your case. Be professional and courteous.

BTW, you may want to refrain from opening multiple threads in both forums. The Mods will beat you up.

Spare me, Mods! I'm sorry!!!!!!!

That gives me hope. I like to think that administrators can be reasonable, but with so many applicants, sometimes there isn't incentive for exceptions. I was planning to do just as you suggest, but it's always nice to know that personal communication can actually accomplish something.

Hopefully getting in touch with the dean isn't impossible.

Tally-ho!!!!!!!

Thank you very much! 😀
