What kinds of extracurriculars can I do besides research to help me get into radiology. I've done basic biology research in the past and absolutely hated it. I'd rather spend my summers doing something more enjoyable like volunteering. Do I absolutely have to do research to have a good shot at rads if everything else like step 1, grades, LoRs are good??

Do whatever makes you happy. Extra-curriculars should highlight other non-academic aspects of your CV that make you a whole and interesting person.

Yes, extra-curriculars should not be done to buff one's application or CV. Do what makes you happy and mirrors your interests. That way, it will both add meaning to one's professional/personal life. Extra-curriculars typically come up during interviews as well--it doesn't factor too much into screening or selection. Extra-curriculars are fun and interesting talking points and it can sometimes show if a person isn't that into what they did... I have seen many med students w/ passions for certain interests and it really shows.

I have a related question . . .
What if you have research experience leading to pubs as an undergrad (not first author, but contributor to multiple papers) - does that "count" as research that you need for a competetive rads position? In medical school I have devoted all of my free time to community service programs, and I don't regret it. But now that residency apps are approaching, I wonder if the fact that I have not been able to do additional research in medical school will hurt me. Thoughts?

Anything is better than nothing. As long as you can discuss the papers intelligently, you are in good shape.
