Hi, I am interested in applying to UT School of Public Health - the general track MPH:
Major: Human Development and Family Sciences
Minor: Business
I am applying to be seated in Fall 2013
I have no idea how to calculate all this gpa stuff but my cumulative is around a 3.1
I have not taken the GRE, will take it this summer
I did an internship in healthcare consulting for 16 weeks
I did research for one year at UT Austin (my institution)

hi ..Good GRE scores can cover low GPA..so try to make it sure..you have a whole year, that u can use for work experience..try more internships or some paid positions that will make your application more strong and ultimately your SOP and recommendations should be outstanding....thats all i can say..Gud Luck..!!..

Hi - thanks. My internship was paid and I am currently doing it, it ends this May. I definitely will get a LOR from my senior research manager where I work. Also, when you mean paid experience, its very hard to get any type of administrative job (I want to go into hospital administration). There are more healthcare consulting positions I can get but thats about it.

Hey there UTaustin90,

There are several routes you can go if you're looking to get into hospital administration, namely a MHA, MPH, MPA, or MBA w/ health administration concentration. If you got a 3.1 at UT Austin, which is a great school in my opinion, I would suggest just focusing on getting your GRE scores above the median to the schools you wish to apply. Your experience is already more than adequate for those schools so no need to kill yourself getting more work experience over what you're currently doing IMHO. I saw on another thread that you're interested staying within Texas so I would suggest your first choice, the University of Texas School of Public Health Houston for the MPH-Health Management or Texas A&M's School of Rural Public Health either in MPH-Health Policy and Management or MHA. Both schools are nationally ranked with UT-H being the better ranked of the two, however Texas A&M offers some great flexibility such as being able to apply for the MHA after you have been admitted into the MPH program your first semester. Additionally as an in-state student both schools are some of the best value institutions in the US with great placement for both schools. Texas A&M's MHA and UT-H have great administrative fellowship placement at places like MD Anderson, Johns Hopkins, Baylor, and Mayo Clinic just to name a few. A good 'safety' option is the University of Houston Clear Lake which has a joint MBA/MHA degree. Hope this helps! 🙂

Thanks for the advice 🙂 I messaged you enox with a couple of questions!!

GPA: Spend 1 semester if you could just taking some intro level health classes? They are generally very easy and lots of them should be online.

GRE: NA

ECs: You're doing fine in this.

Have a decent PS and you should be good.

UTH recommends per their FAQ a minimum of 3.0 and a 1000 on the old GRE scale. If you can't get your GPA up, nail the GRE, and you got it in the bag.

If you have any Q's---just lmk.
