Hey hey..
I've been browsing this site for a while. I consider myself a nontrad as I am the youngest of four children but the first in my family (and first generation in my family) to attend college. I am a SUPER-junior at the moment and applying to medical school for the 2013 cycle.
Any other first gen's out there?

Are we talking first-generation college students or first generation to pursue a career in medicine? I'm the first in my family (and extended family) to do anything healthcare related.

Yeah I'm second gen college and first gen (of any one that I have ever known family or friends) medical college. I'm also planning to enter the 2013 cycle.

first generation college which naturally means first generation physician (if i get accepted). In fact, other than the ones I have shadowedor went to, I don't know a single physician family member or friend.

I'm first in my family to head for medicine (unless you count my cousin the chiropractor). My older sister was the first to finish college (she's an elementary school teacher).

Interestingly enough, I got in contact with my birth mother a while back and she went back to school in her mid-30s to become a nurse. Maybe there's something to that whole nature vs nurture thing...

Awesome! I am in the same situation- I really don't know anybody in the health field. (Well, I didn't.) My boyfriends parents both work in healthcare.. so that is where I've been able to meet people.

So yup- first generation college. My dad was a emt in the army for a short stint.. but did not attend university until he was in his late forties and had a full ride from the va. 20 years of service is good for something.

I'm curious as to what makes people (you all here) decide to head into health or medicine when nobody else in their family has done so? Or gone to college at all?

Ok, not to get philosophical, but I think everyone is born with different personality traits. This is debatable, but I don't think you get to choose your profession, I think it chooses you. I'm not saying we're born to do one thing only in life, but I think people have certain traits that make them a good police officer for example. Another person may have the traits that make them a great chef.

Sadly, I think many people never realize their own potential, skills and/or calling. That's why you see so many people who despise their jobs.

Let's just say, if you find something that you would do for free...that's your career.

How's the saying go.. "Enjoy your job, and you'll never work a day in your life."

First generation college & medicine.

First generation high school graduate. My grandparents were amish, they descended from Switzerland in 40's due to German religious persecution. Non-traditional for sure, I made the decision to persue medicine when i was 25.

I'm first generation college/med on my mother's side.

Almost the same, save for the last part. Most of my aunts, uncles, and cousins are nurses (insert stereotype here), but as far as my immediate family goes, no one in health care.

First generation college student here, no one in my extended family has gone either. To answer this question I always loved science in general, I used to play with microscopes and collect insects as a child(Pinned and labeled with Order and Family). As I got older I became more fascinated with the human body, shadowed volunteered, never looked back since.

I have always liked and excelled in science. Going through some some old notes from high school recently, i found an interest assessment from my sophomore year that listed Doctor as #1. For me and for many other nontrads its always been there. The real question is why did it take so long to make the leap?
I want to hear other nontrads responses to that...

I was afraid of such a big commitment FEAR. Now, especially with SDN im on my way. I am quitting a $50k job in two weeks to go back to school full time (for the third time).

Off subject, i need some feedback; Im thinking about starting a thread about the effect of obesity on admittance to med school. Interesting?

Same here, fear of commitment, lack of funding. But after working in a job that wasn't healthcare related I felt void in me, I knew I would never be satisfied with a career other than medicine.

Started a family young. 18. Went to EMT school in hopes of becoming a firefighter. I was hooked. I had always liked science but as a mediocre high school student, never entertained the idea of being a doctor. I did become a firefighter, and 2 years later a paramedic. During paramedic school I always found myself thinking, "I'd love to know what these doctors know." But I progressed as a firefighter and a medic and built my career and raised my family. Now my career is coming to an end and I still have that yearning to know what those doctors know. I've been in this game for 22 years. My kids are 22 and 17 and when I reach 25 years on the job, I'll have earned a comfortable pension that will make my push toward med school that much easier. My degree will be done by the time I retire. Most people tell me that I look like I'm in my early 30's, I still sport a 6-pack, and I can still run circles around my 22 y/o rookies. It's time to start Act II of my life so I'll see where this doctor thing takes me. If it works out, I'll be 52-ish when I finish residency. If not, there's always PA school! 40 is the new 20 guys!

And THAT"S why it took so long to make the leap!
