Hi Everyone.

I am planning to attend a foreign university to study Veterinary Medicine (Looking into Zambia or maybe India)

Does it matter where I study?

I only need to graduate from ANY school and then take the NAVLE?

Or are some universities not accepted and you aren;t allowed to take the NAVLE?

If you want to just take the Navle, you need to attend an AVMA accredited school. There is a list on the AVMA website.

If you don't mind doing more than one exam, you can go to many more schools, but you will need to pass the PAVE/other exam before you can sit the NAVLE. It is an expensive and long process.

Hi. I do not care how many tests I need to take. I am an American, but I have lived abroad for a fw years and have no desire to return to the states yet. I also could not afford the tuition at a US school. I also would like to work with "exotic" animals. I just recieved some great info from Kenya, so that is also on the table.

So If I take the NAVLE and the PAVE/other exam, can I attend any school I want? Or are there stil limitations? Thanks

I believe you can go to any school you wish and then sit the ECFVG. You really should confirm by contacting them though before committing to a life-altering decision. You should also consider whether or not the school you pick is going to provide you with an adequate education to prepare you to sit the ECFVG/PAVE. After passing that exam, you then need to sit the NAVLE.

I believe the whole process takes around 3 years and costs around $8000 (to sit the ECFVG and NAVLE) if you pass the first time. In my experience many graduates of programs in India, the Middle East and African nations that come to Australia wanting to practice actually end up going through vet school again. This is usually because their programs have not been rigorous enough to give them a realistic chance at passing the exams in a reasonable amount of time, and for many of them it is quicker to go through vet school again then study for the exams on their own. The accreditation process for foreign veterinarians is very similar here to what it is in the states.

Attending an AVMA acredited school outside of the US is usually more expensive than attending school within the US. However, i would be hesitant to obtain a veterinary degree which is not readily recognisable by other nations especially if you like to travel. For example, if you got your degree in Kenya, could you get readily licensed to practice in South Africa?

Makes it MUCH easier to practice in the US if you ever return plus you can be licensed in the UK/EU (right, UK folks?). Also, you can use federal loans (at least as far as I know) at these which should be a consideration if you think US schools are expensive (since outside the US really do tend to be more).

Thank you for the information. So, as long as i take (and pass) the NAVLE and the ECFVG, I will be able to practice the states no matter what school I choose? I am leaning pretty heavily towards Kenya, but I still have about 50 more schools to research.

Why would you believe information off an anonymous internet forum over contacting the organisation YOURSELF.
