Hi,
I'm Brian, a soon-to-be 3rd year at Einstein. At least as long as I pass my boards in a week *shudder* :scared:

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here is planning on going to Einstein next year? If anyone has any questions about my school (not about the waitlist. it's very active, but I honestly have no clue if u're likely to come off it soon, 1 day before school starts, or never. good luck, though 👍 ), please feel free to ask. And if anyone wants some tours of nearby Bronx areas, let me know, and I'll be happy to spend 20 minutes taking you to some of the nearby areas once you get here. No, I'm not an orientation director. Those guys are 1st years becoming 2nd years soon. You'll know their class and not mine most likely.

Ok, enough procrastination from studying. good luck to everyone who's got in, who's waiting, and who's applying for next year. I know it's a horrid process.

hey there!

i was almost certainly going to einstein but just got off the waitlist at sinai. while i got a better academic feel at einstein i like the location of sinai and its supposedly (i'll find out soon) fait need-based aid. einstein doesnt give out much in the way of need-nased grants.

anyways i was wondering if you could comment on your perspective of the 2 schools, or at least of your school. also, i will actually be re-visiting both schools next thursday and friday. will there be students around then?

thanks so much for your words.

Hi Brian

I was wondering if you could comment on the Bronx area especially where the school and clinical rotations are. I am going to Einstein next year and I have no clue as to what the Bronx area is like. I was born and raised in Northern California so my knowledge about the east coast is very limited. Because safety is an issue for me, how safe is that area because I am hearing so much negative things about the area that I am starting to get worried. If you could give me your insight on the area that would be really helpful.

well, Sinai's in the middle of manhattan. right between spanish harlem and Upper East Side, so that's really cool. I have a car, though, so it's not a big deal. Makes getting around the Bronx a cinch. I go into the city all the time, and there's also an express bus here that goes into the city. But if you honestly feel that you'd want to go out into the city every day, Sinai might be a better choice. Learning-wise, I think my school might be slightly better, if only because of Jacobi and Montefiore. Same thing goes for SUNY Downstate. Of course, my perspective is that of a future EM doc. That's for 3rd and 4th year mostly, though. Academically, though, no real discernable difference. Einstein, Sinai, and NYU tend to be pretty much at the same level for the last decade.

The one nice thing about einstein (and i honeslty forget about Sinai in this regard) is that it's P/F, the first two years, which takes a lot of pressure off and let's u just focus on learning. And the other thing i love (except for teh end of 2nd year) is taht we block courses together and only take 2 or 3 at a time. block tests together. os that generally means that everyon'es partying 2 weeks, then studying 2 weeks, then repeat.

Thursday and Friday? 1st years will be around still i think. All the 2nd years are going out of their minds now sutdying for step 1's, though. Or they're on vacation, or a combo of both. If you're around next Thursday (June 8th?), I think I might be in the Bronx, so I can grab a bite to eat w/ u and answer any q's you ahve if you wanted. same offer goes to anyone else who's coming then.

Although the area around Einstein is not the nicest place in the world, it is far (and I mean far) from dangerous. However, if you are that worried about safety, rest assured that there is a police precint a block away. People like to make such a big deal about the bronx and how dangerous it is. If you have a good head on your shoulders, there is no reason to get into trouble. I can not comment on the area around it's clinical affiliates because I dont know what they are. Weiler and Jacobi Hospitals are a block away from campus, and Beth Isreal is in down town manhattan( a nice area, but a bitch of a commute if you have to take the subway down at crazy hours) . The rest, if any, I am not familiar with.

A lot of Californians here actually. The only NYC area med schools that are not in good areas are SUNY Downstate, Columbia (if you travel 4-5 blocks away from campus, no reason to, though), and Sinai if you travel several blocks north (again, no reason to).

Einstein is in a very safe neighborhood. if you doubt it, go onto any side street, it's actually a really nice residential area of the Bronx. The rumor is that this area is mafia residency territory, so they don't tolerate any crime where they live, lol. There is some truth to that, but there's also a police precinct just down the block. The areas of the Bronx that are shady and dangerous are South Bronx, and maybe Mott Hill? We're not anywhere near those places, so no worries.

Jacobi and Weiler are right by the school. Montefiore is in North Bronx, the area's not as nice, but perfectly safe. We have a shuttle bus to take us there.
Beth Israel's in Manhattan.
LIJ, North Shore are in Long Island.
Bronx Lebanon is the only connected hospital here that's not in a great area. Some 3rd year clerkships are there, Southwest Bronx. But not too big a deal. just get plaza cab service (school service) directly there and back.

yes so I was wondering, what are the benefits that you see about P/F vs grades?
thanks🙂

Can you comment on the advantages of going to Einstein over NYU? I was planning on NYU, but I recently got some money from Einstein... Thanks!

😛 it kills competitiveness between students. I don't see any benefits to not having pass/fail, honestly. It's not like passing is easy (it is in some areas, but not most of them), so everyone still studies really hard for every test. Like pretty much every school w/ P/F, students send out their personal study sheets all the time in the week leading up to every test. We all do great on the boards, so it obviously isn't making anyone lazy. 3rd and 4th years have honors, so we do have AoA just like everyone else.

I guess the only way that grades really matter is if u're trying to get a residency in some random place that's never even heard of the school u're attending (and then, i'd think board scores are more important than grades anyway), or if it's really important to you to have better grades than everyone else (don't ask me why this is important, they're all going to be ur colleagues).

BTW, if you think grades are important in order to get into hard residencies, that's not really true. key to getting into a hard residency is to go to a good school (this is not according to US World and News rankings. this is actually different in every field. I know in emergency, for example, Downstate and Einstein are considered great schools in the area, moreso than Columbia and Cornell. Function of the hospitals we spend time in), do well on boards, and find and work w/ the known people of that field. grades would be such a minor concern after all that.

Einstein over NYU? dunno, both schools are pretty much on equal footing. we prolly have better housing, from what i remember of their dorms, they have the best location out of all the nyc schools for hanging around the city (yes, better than Cornell, even though Cornell is in a nicer section of the city). Honestly, if you're going to go out around town, and don't have a car, and location is important to you, go to NYU. If u're going into EM, go Einstein. If cost of schools' important, go to Einstein since u said it'll be a lot cheaper?. But in general, NYU and Einstein are on the same footing.

Another thing to think about, NYU seems to attract a much younger class (fewer nontrads, most straight from college) than Einstein, and most live in dorms or donate a kidney to pay for rent.

just out if curiosity, is it true that there is no white coat ceremony at AECOM and if not do you know why?

no clue why we haven't had one. Not sure why it's done at a lot of schools, though. (well, besides making you feel special of course, which is always nice 🙂 ). White coat ceremony is when you get your first white coat as a 1st year right?

thx MightyAngus for mentioning that NYU is a much younger class. totally forgot that. NYU tends to be a fresh outta college crowd, and here is more mixed w/ ages, half at least taking a year or 20 off, I'd guess.
