is 228/95 competitive for general surgery (categorical)?

what step 2 score should I aimed in order to be competitive?

Yes.

Always aim for the best score you can get.

On a similar note. I've seen the score avg's for USMLE Step 1 for specific specialties, in particular, GS. Is there a source similar to this for COMLEX Level 1 scores for particular specialties? I'm considering categorical GS residencies in the Detroit area and wanted a rough idea of where I stand with the competition, in particular the DO GS residencies.

I'm thinking of applying to both MD and DO GS residencies in the area.

Any response will help. If it matters, my USMLE step 1 is 238/99 and my COMLEX Level 1 is 571/87.

My advise to all DO's is the best way to improve your chances is to take and score well on the USMLE. Most of the PDs I have spoken with have consistently stated something like the following.....

~"we look at USMLE..... we do not understand or attempt to extrapolate a comparison to the DO exams.... they are apples and oranges and we compare USMLE to USMLE.... we have no real basis of comparison for USMLE to DO/comlex scores..."

Some have even been candid enough to take it further and say something to the effect of....

~"a DO applicant has potentially gone the DO route because of inability to compete or achieve an MD medical school route.... thus, if they are now trying to compete and or re-enter the MD route they really must achieve a competitive score/achievement at the MD level. For us, that is USMLE..."

I am not going to debate the merits or fairness of these paraphrased statements/positions. But, in theory, you could presume a fully trained physician from either route should be able to pass the USMLE. Thus, I do always advise anyone training via a DO school and interested in a residency position at a major "MD" type program..... do NOT waste time and energy trying to argue fairness and justice, study and take USMLE. Once you are trained and practicing attending at such a program, you can engage in efforts for change.
