Hi I'm new to this forum, I need an honest opinion from someone who is currently achieving to be a doctor or someone who already is one.

I'm currently in high school (11th grade) I wanted to became a doctor my whole life because I'm good a taking care of people like my mom and grandma who are both sickly and I'm currently taking care of them both.

I dropped out of public high school and started taking online classes to be at home more to help out, i failed really bad from 9th to 10th grade, I wasn't focused I had to many personal issues then for 11th grade i went to public high school I started in the middle of a semester and failed once again. The counsler said it was best for me to go to an alternative school to catch up and make up credits. Right now I'm currently at the alternative school and Im making Straight A''s and have a 4.00 , I also have a tutor to help me out everyday.

The thing is I'm scared, I messed up too badly on my transcripts from 9th -11th grade and I'm afraid that I will never make it to medical school. I know i have to go to community college first but can i still be accepted into a medical school?I'm not a dumb kid,a lot of things got in the way of my school work and i just didnt do or turn in the work and now I'm paying for it but now since I'm getting my education back on track, I was wishing that i still had hope that I can make it into medical school.

You are only in high school. Medical schools do not look at high school coursework unless it is dual enrollment. The main thing you should be focusing on right now is getting into a good college. Prepare for the SAT and keep your grades up.

From something you said in your post, I'm not 100% that you understand the path to medical school.

Matriculation into medical school requires a 4-year degree from an accredited university. Going to community college isn't going to cut it. You can take two years of your education there and transfer, but you cannot attain a 4-year degree from a community college and enter medical school.

All 4-year universities require that you major in something. You cannot receive a 4-year degree in Undeclared. Please note that you do not have to major in Biology or Chemistry to go to medical school. Medical schools do not give preference to one major over another; they do, however, like to see diversity. A major in the humanities would prob. look better than Biology due to the percentage of Biology pre-meds.

There are several required courses to get into medical school. These differ from school to school, but most have these in common:

Biology with lab - 8 credits
Inorganic Chemistry with lab - 8 credits
Organic Chemistry with lab - 8 or 10 credits
Physics with lab - 8 or 10 credits
^ These are the main ones

College Mathematics - 6 or 8 credits
College Composition - 6 credits
^ These are required at a lot of med. schools. Usually satisfied through core requirements in your 4 year degree anyway.

The competitiveness of your GPA differs between medical schools. A 3.5 may be average at one school, but will get you screened out at another.

Along with your education, you also need extracurricular activities, such as volunteering, shadowing, leadership experience, clubs, etc. You can find many threads on this using the search function.

Most, if not all, medical schools require the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). This is a standardized exam that is scored on a scale of 3 - 45. There are 4 sections of the MCAT:

Biological Sciences - Consists of Biology and Organic Chemistry questions - Scored from 1 - 15
Physical Sciences - Chemistry and Physics - Scored from 1 - 15
Verbal Reasoning - Critical Thinking - Reading Comprehension - Scored from 1 - 15
Writing - Scored from J - T.

Say for example I get a 10 on the BS section, 12 on the PS section, 8 on the VR, and a R for the writing sample, my total score is a 30R.

You can find various threads on this using the search function. Depending on where you apply will determine if your MCAT is competitive or not.

There are many other paths to medical school, but you can find those through the search function. Use the keywords: Post bacc, BS/MD, and SMP
You should be able to find something. You don't really need to worry about the Post bacc and SMP right now, but a BS/MD would be something to look into if you have competitive stats for them when you graduate high school.

I can't think of anything else that you would need to know right now. Once you get into college, there is more to be learned. Right now, relax and enjoy high school. You've got a long way to go from here.

I'm guessing that is my cue to type out another page of information. haha

I can't really give him any financial aid advice though. Besides filing the FAFSA and filling out scholarships, there is nothing else I can do. He'll learn about paying for medical school once he gets into college. I'm sure he'll have some type of advisor to help him.
