I didn't match this year. I will do internship starting July and plan to take CBSE to improve my score on August 17th. I plan to start studying right now as I will probably be very busy during July-August. My concern is how realistic I can expect for my study time during those months.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has been through similar situation before. Any input would be greatly appreciate.

It is very difficult and the stuff you learn prior to internship will be difficult to retain given you will have 6 weeks in between before you take your exam. That being said, it depends on how intensive your internship is and how much they are willing to lighten your load to study.

I agree with Onyxxx7.

If you already have 70+ on your CBSE exam, then don't worry about, do well on internship, get good letters from faculty, and you will match most likely.

If you have 50 or low 60s on your CBSE, your chance of matching even with internship is very very low.

Interns are free labors or cheapest labors to OMFS service in hospital setting. Any program will do its best to get their labors so that things can get done and all the scut works are done. However, the trend in OMFS matching shows that programs require higher scores every year.

If I were you, I won't start an internship until you have legit CBSE. Trust me. You might completely waste 1 year if you don't match. You might end up spending extra time to study for CBSE, and then find another internship to prove your commitment to OMFS

He has a 69 which with a good intern year and good letters will bode well but I believe he’s international. Which i have heard is a crapshoot even for 70+.

@nuk try to find an internship at a program that will allow time for you to study. Parkland makes these kinds of accommodations so look into their internship program if you haven’t already secured one elsewhere.

Yes I was really surprised his 69 didn’t match.
The international thing is probably the biggest thing holding him back. He has to find the international friendly programs and apply to those. A couple of hours surfing through resident profiles tends to show which programs are international friendly.

Low 60s can get you matched if you have strong letters, good rank, and especially with an internship - but more likely to a 4 year program.

The reason you don't see a lot of posting about it here is because this place attracts people who like to tout their high scores. Fact of the matter is that after the match there are not that many low 60s scores left floating around during the internship scramble.
