Hey!
I really like languages...and I was raised speaking Arabic and English simultaneously. I then learned Spanish in HS and currently use it at least 2 days/week. I am taking ASL (American Sign Language) right now to fulfill a cultural diversity requirement...but i REALLY enjoy it 🙂 so i decided I want to take a year of it. But I like Spanish as well and want to take a whole year of that. And my Arabic is strong but I cannot read or write in Arabic so I figured maybe a few classes in that would reinforce the speaking and help alot for reading and writing.
I was wondering since people say constantly to "do what you like" would it be alright if I took a year of Spanish, ASL, and Arabic each? (if I did that, however, that leaves little to NO room for electives). Or would it be worth it to spend an extra year undergrad here taking some language courses? I can't minor in sign language because kids with deaf siblings/parents/etc. have SUCH a huge advantage in speed, can't minor in Spanish because of Hispanic students having a huge advantage, and I could minor in Arabic but I don't know how well I'd do. I kind of just want to be pretty fluent in the 3 and not just focus on one. Any thoughts?
Would it be normal to take all of my science classes, required for my major and then every single elective pretty much filled with a language? or no? 👍
