This is the breakdown for the transitional MD year ....
2 months general IM floors - q4hrs Overnight call, will be like medicine at any other place. Those 14 call days will be the worst days of your intern year. Otherwise when you are not on call, if you are efficient, you can be out of the hospital by noon.
2 months Surgery (1 general, 1 trauma) - you will learn a lot and unlike surgery at other places, this is VERY manageable. You will be on call 2x/wk until 6pm. You will always have one weekend day off. The days that you are not on call, and you get your work done, you will be out of there by noon. The only reason you would stay there later is if you desire to go scrub in on the surgeries, which you can and are only required to go to 6. After rounds 8-9am you are pretty much done, unless you are on call which you would hang around for consults. You will also have 7 days of nightfloat which are awesome because you don't have to round and they are split up into 4 nights and 3 nights. You get one day off before and 2 days off after your string of nights.
EM (1mo) 15-17 shifts
AMbulatory Care (1mo) 3 pts in the am, 3 in the pm, 2 hr lunch
Pediatrics (2months) - nothing complicated, at most there will be 7 -10 patients on the floor. complicated cases go to loma linda. You rotate between the floors, clinic and nursery.
Vaca 3 wks
Surgery Clinic 2 wks
Electives (4 months) You can use 2 months of this for research, and you can use 2 months of this as an away...
*there are also a ton of medical students which really makes your life easier*
If you want to stay in CA....
I think Harbor TY offers an xtra month or two of electives but you will work your ass off during surgery and medicine.
Scripps SD is the cushiest. I think everyone in the country knows about it.
