Hi,

Just a quick blast out to see if there happens to be any joint JD/PhD psychology graduate students reading this forum. Would love to hear from you and learn more about your experiences/tips on handling both programs...

I will be applying to internship next year and would have completed my law degree, and would super appreciate any past or present Jd/PhD applicants, or other colleagues guidance on appropriate internship sites (am child focused) and tips of navigating the process as a joint degree student....

Thanks!

My experience thus far has been that the JD/PhD has and will open up many doors. My post doc time for forensic psych is cut in half (takes off 2 years), also prepares me well for expert witness work, legal and psychology academia (publishing across both programs) and private business (trial/ standard consultancy) or family law/parent coordination work....

What post-doc is 4 years?

To be more precise (and this may have changed since I last checked) but my understanding is that a law degree takes 2 years off the requirement you need to be ABFP....You either need 5 years of clinical experience or 1 year formal post doc (you can waive 2 years of the experience with the JD).

I have a JD from before and finishing PhD. I practiced a little. I know a JD/PhD but he does more business consulting than forensic. I am not sure how it will help/hurt me.

I have nothing to add except that you will be doubly awesome. 😍

Hi there,

I am not in a joint program but finished my JD and now in 1st year of PhD. It's been a while since I looked up ABFP req's and was surprised to read about the JD cutting down the length of time of certification (yay! at least there's 1 nice thing about having survived law school). Have you taken the bar yet? What kind of child forensic internships are you looking for? As for me, I was hoping to focus on correctional facilities.

Wow! Ok, that made my day. A positive reframe to law school, 2 bar exams, and practicing! I had a friend who had the most wonderful statement about practicing law and law school - "three years of hell to become the devil" love it! So glad to be in psychology now!
