Any Kaplan DAT teachers here?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It depends on your location and experience. They pay well -- upwards of $20/hr from what I've heard.

$15/hr is the starting pay... I think they pay all the starting teachers the same regardless of your scores. I was gonna do it, but my friend who did it told me that they never paid her on time, nor did they pay for her training as they promised.

So I decided not to do it and just became a high school private tutor. The pay is much better ($22 starting in my case.)

So in my opinion it's not worth to teach for Kaplan, esp. you have to audition in order to get the job. However it may not be that bad at kaplans in other places. I am in s. cali.

what kind of scores do u need to get that job? just curious.. 25/25/25 ?

you just have to score at or above the 90th percentile on your respective test( fairly certain for the DAT this is in regards to the AA, not TS). In your case, I am fairly certain a 22 is above the 90th percent. If you want to do it, go to their website and sign up. They'll email and phone you more than once to come audition. Not sure what happens after that as I decided not to pursue the job.

Actually I am going to start my training here pretty soon despite the fact that they told me that there aren't very many DAT classes going on right now in the area. (Provo, UT) I only got a 20 on the DAT, but this year that was exactly the 90 percentile. I think if you get in the 90th percentile on either the TS or the AA then you're fine. I'm not sure what they do about the PAT. Anyway i don't know if they pay me for the training, but I hope they keep thier promise. $15 an hour out here isn't all that bad so that's why i'm doing it!

I have taught for Kaplan for 6 months or so. Depending on your location, you need to be in the 90%, or 95%. You then have to audition, then got through training. You CAN be cut in training. I saw it happen to a few people. Then you get paid 13-15/hr for your first course. If you are good, then you can get 20-25/hr. I already get 25/hr, plus time it takes me to prepare for class. I have also taught around the country at different Kaplans, all expenses paid. I also private tutor for 50/hr. I love it, and to the poster above, I have never been paid late! You should get pissed at your location, that sucks

I taught there for a year or so, along with that crazy guy JavadiCavity - it's the one Ruth is managing now, right? They pay $12 an hour for all training and for your first full class that you teach. Once you finish a full class, they'll bump you up to $15 an hour, which is the cap there. Near the very end they actually bumped me up to $18 an hour for my last couple of classes because of good teacher reviews, so if you work hard and teach well, it can pay extremely well. For some reason, Provo's teacher rates are lower than everywhere else in the country. I guess it's to keep things in line with all the restaurants getting away with paying their servers $2 an hour in the hopes that all the cheap zoobies will tip them enough to make up the gap between minimum wage.

Thanks all for your responses.

BenignDMD: So if you're teaching for the first time, you will get around $15/hr and if the students write good reviews, you can teach the course again and get around $25/hr?

Can you also teach at different locations at the same time? i.e. you could teach the Bio 1 class at location A and the next day teach the same Bio 1 class at location B, and get paid for both?

Finally, when you say you get paid for the time it takes to prepare for class, how do they know how long you've prepared for class? what if you just make up a number?

Thanks again.

1. The pay depends on what region you are in. Ie, if you're in the north they pay more than the centers down in the south. In TN, I started out with $15 and got bumped up to $18; in the north, I got paid $20/hr

2. They will pay for training as well as "out of classroom" time (time you take to prepare the manuel, answer student questions). However, that is very minimal pay ($7/hr) but it's still something.

3. The plus side to teaching for Kaplan also includes the fact that they give you a manuel to teach from--you have all the material, everything, right there! You don't have to stress over making your own lesson plan.

4. Teaching the DATs is a very rewarding experience, IMO, all of the students I've had have been very appreciative. Kaplan is always in desperate need of DAT tutors--normally, they just have an MCAT person teaching the DAT course and have the students watch a video for the PAT sections. However, by having an MCAT person teach the DATs, a lot of things will be lost--I always made sure to tell my students about my experience with the DATs, inside tips and hints that Kaplan doesn't always tell you about, and general comments about dentistry. I always told my students to buy an additional prep other than just Kaplan, because their PAT section in the Kaplan books are too easy. I also told them that sometimes (30% of cases?) the questions on the reading comprehension section will come in order--and if they do then, it's pointless to waste your time making an outline of the passage, just get to the questions right away. I also tell them that their pre-health advisor at their school usually doesn't know jack about applying to dental school, and that it's best if they keep check of everything themselves.

hmmm I think I might be interested in teaching for KAPLAN,thanks for the info.
(better than working for free in a research lab)

I just auditioned and getting signed up for training sessions. I'm in Michigan, so I don't know how well they pay or anything. I just wanted the job, because it seems rewarding and meaningful than being a cashier at two resturants. I'm hoping things go well, because I think it would be a fun job.
