Ah, makes me sad...
🙁 And ANGRY
😡 And sad...
🙁
😀
I just have impressions from people I've met + med students I knew when I was at UCSD.
1) UCSD -- small program. academic. They publish their own EM journal. The Scripps intern year is excellent. Great for EMS and Tox exposure. The hospital is located in an at-risk area (although still San Diego), so it probably has a higher percentage of indigent care than the other two. Blunt > penetrating. Cheapest cost of living of the three (although Palo Alto isn't too bad for the Bay Area, and the area around UCLA is decently affordable). Not the most happening place in the world, but it's SAN DIEGO.
👍
2) UCLA-OliveView -- quatenary-care center in a nice area of LA. academic. Blunt > penetrating. Cushiest of these three. UCLA sports. Most airborne particulate matter of the three. Funnest area of the three. Definitely the hottest undergrads of these three.
😉
3) Stanford -- academic. quatenary-care hospital in RICH West Palo Alto. East Palo Alto isn't what it used to be, so blunt > penetrating. Palo Alto is probably closest to resembling Ann Arbor although it's no college-town. It's a GREAT location -- 1/2-1 hour from the beach, 1/2 hour from the city (SF)... You can say hi to my old EMS co if it's still in business... or drive south a 1/2 hour and visit my parents...
🙁
Local lingo hint: When you're in SoCal, refer to the freeways as "THE 101" or "THE 10." When you're in NorCal, omit the "the" and just say "880" or "101." Also, NO ONE SAYS "CALI." After that, you should fit in fine.
😀
Food: There's a GREAT fish taco place right by the Ocean Beach pier if you have the chance to go exploring in San Diego.
