Hello All,
I wanted to know if any MPH Dartmouth graduate/present students can answer few of my questions. I am a social worker in the field of Human services and at present work with the State providing early intervention services to children birth-3yrs of age.
I have a Master's in Human Development and Family studies and have been working in the field of human services for 5+ years. I have always wanted to pursue a degree in health sector mgmt/public health and the time now just seems right for me. On the personal front my husband got accepted at the Tuck Business school at Dartmouth and will be starting school in Fall'08.
I have reviewed online the MPH/ MS program offerred through Dartmouth Medical School but have lots of question. I am very eager to know:
a)How tough is the admission procedure?
b)As I want to apply for the July'08 session....am I am late for application submission?
c) My chance to get in based on my background?
d)Do they give prefernce to doctors or students pursuing a medical degree?
e)Dartmouth website states that students without graduate degree have to submit GRE....As I already have my Master's(from India) will it be taken into consideration?
Sorry for asking so many questions in one post....Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
thanks🙂

Hi 2DOMPH,

I definitely don't think that it's too late to apply, and you seem like a solid applicant with good experience. I'm not sure if I can answer all of your questions with 100% certainty. You're best bet is to call the school and talk with someone from admissions (they're all really really nice and helpful).

I know that Dartmouth looks to accept people from a wide variety of fields, and public health/clinical experience is a huge asset. This does not mean at all that you have to be pursuing an MD. I also know that they'll take into consideration that your husband is in Tuck. We actually take a number of classes that are cross-listed with Tuck classes, so you may end up in a number of your husband's classes. As far as the GRE, you probably have to take that. They also accept the MCAT. I would recommend that you contact the office and ask if you could apply and then send your GRE scores later. There are also a number of people in our class who are taking the MPH/MS as their second Masters.

Also, don't forget that Tuck MBA is a 2-year program, while the MPH is a 1-year program. Apply this year, but if you don't get in, you could always take it in your husband's second year and graduate together. You also might consider applying as a part-time student and spreading the course load over the 2 years.

Here's the number to call: (603) 653-3222

Hope this helps.

Hi Ingemar,
Thank you so much for your prompt response 🙂 I have contacted the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and was advised to speak to Mr. Alex Thorngren( Admissions Recruitment Manager). We are visiting Hanover end of this month to check out the Institute and get a better insight about the program. Do you recommend anyone else too...Is it possible to meet Dr O'Connor during one of his class breaks....I was informed that he will busy during the days we will be there . Thanks again 🙂

Gerry O'Connor is usually hard to connect with, since he is so busy. Alex or Karen Tombs (who is an administrator for the program) can probably hook you up with a faculty member to speak with. I would recommend Elliot Fisher, Paul Batalden, Ethan Berke, Nate Jones, or Gil Welch. All are good people to talk with.

Thanks KelbornCmd,
That's great idea! I will request Mr. Thorngren to connect me with one of these faculty members. Whom should I contact if I want to connect with any current students?( discuss campus life, present class strength, admission critreia..) Thanks 🙂

I would just ask any student what they think of the program. If you are there on a weekday, there are always students milling around the classrooms.

I graduated from Dartmouth's MPH in '07. Loved it. Anyways...

Give them a call. They're very understanding. Alex is great. Before, when classes started in August, they were accepting applicants until April/May. Now that they're starting classes in the summer it's probably bumped up earlier. However, it's worth giving them a call.
