hey everybody,

i just wanted to know if there are any MPHers (specifically epidemiology) here...if so what are your goals and how do u plan to combine the MD/MPH

i am interested in MD/MPH...would like to use it with bio/chem defense. do you know if the md/mph is harder to get into than the regular MD????

I'm an "MPHer!" I plan to apply to medical school (both MD and DO) for 2004 admission, and hope to pursue psychiatry. I also have an interest in preventive medicine and would ultimately like to start a small research program in psychiatric epidemiology alongside my practice. Hmm...that's probably about 10+ years down the road. Hopefully it won't be too bumpy!

The MPH is valuable degree to have. If you have a clinical degree -- MD, DO, DMD, DDS, OD, DPM, etc. -- the MPH gives you a handle of population-based sciences in addition to the microbial, behavioral, and ecological factors affecting disease and health. For more info, check out this website:

I'm a DO/MPH. My MPH is in clinical epidemiology and I'm interested in a career in clinical research. It's a great combo and it does open doors down the road. Academically oriented residencies are always looking for residents with research experience. I highly recommend it.

If you are interested in a more rigorous background in clinical research, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has an MD/PhD program in the Health Services Research division of Epidemiology. While this program is a longer committment (a 6-7 year combined program), it is a great investment, with the benefit of having more in-depth research training than the MPH, and federal funding of your education (this makes it easier to transition into academic medicine - debt-free). 😎
