Just wondering if any of y'all play an instrument(s)? Any of you have time to still play in a gig while doing pre-med? Also, how many of you asian americans play violin, piano or clarinet?
😉

I play electric guitar, but I'm pretty bad at it. I hope to eventually play with a group @ jazz gigs in clubs. 😀

I have been a DJ spinnin Hip Hop and 80's music for 4 years now and I was pre-med, I just applied this year and things are going good. Music is an awesome way to release stress and express yourself

yeah i've been playing guitar since i was in 7th grade.
I have 4 guitars now and they're definitely great stress relievers.

Not Asian, but I played violin in two symphony orchestras, gigged a little, and taught violin lessons / conducted a youth orchestra while I was an undergrad (I just finished college). Sometimes the extra time commitments were stressful, but mostly it was rewarding and a great release from chemistry (my major).

I'm matriculating at U Michigan Med School in the fall, and they asked a ton of questions about music during my interviews. They also have the Life Sciences Orchestra, a symphony just for med students, doctors, and hospital personnel. I'm psyched to get involved with that (if I can).

I was a music major (composer) in college, which was great while it lasted but I'm not sure how I'm going to keep it up in med school.

I'm sure it's a lot easier to sing/play in an ensemble or two as a supplement to med school than to actual sit down and write music (which is mentally exhausting), so I'll probably try to switch back to performance. I play trombone (unfortunately - I say that because it's a great instrument that's stuck with SO much godawful repetoire) and euphonium, and I have even been known to sing in a choir or two.

Hopkins is affiliated with the Peabody Institute, so it is awesome to have that such a great conservatory available where I can participate/take classes. Sarah, you should have a great time too (musically speaking), since Michigan's music school is one of the best in the country.

bioboss, I hear ya. I wish I was a better jazzer than I am. 🙂

I play sax (jazz, funk, rock, etc... I gave up playing classical/band stuff after high school), but being pre-med and an engineering major kinda cuts into the amount of time I have to gig/play in ensembles. I hope that I still have time to play when I get to med school.

I've been playing guitar since 1st grade. I was in a band in high school and part of college. During my sophomore year we came to the point where we had major label interest and could have made a career out of it; however, that meant that I had to quit school and give up all of my scholarships. Needless to say, my rock star days are over, but nothing relieves stress like cranking your amp up and waking up the neighborhood.

In the last three years I have taught myself(via the internet) how to play the bass(not the fish), the guitar, and Im currently learning piano. It helps me deal with the stress of school and family.:horns: :horns: :horns:

Rx Bandit952, let me guess... A ska/punk band-possibly influenced by the Rx Bandits....hummm...

I play guitar and bass and played bass in a band during college. We just started developing interest and opening for large bands like Rob Zombie, Adema, Trapt, and Mudvayne when i left for school last August. I still fantasize about, but you can always pick up the stick and play/sing. You will never be allowed as a musician to walk into a hospital and do surgery.

That said, if my bands homebase wasnt 1000 miles away from me you can be damn sure i would still be playing.

you can check out some of our older stuff on mp3.com

btw a great and very fast way to learn to play guitar or bass is to learn to play your fav songs via tabs on the net or in mags, hmm....rereading your post now maybe you are. NE ways if not you should check it out.

i've been playing the diggity drums for 7 years... talk about stress relief😛

I too am a musician (piano and singing). Do any of you put music down on your AMCAS application? I'm wondering because I haven't done too much performance stuff since high school so I don't know if I should list it.

I'm a singer and I listed it under the Postsecondary Experiences section. Although I didn't major in music or anything, I do perform several times a month, so I listed it.

It's up to you, just don't put *anything* on your AMCAS that you don't want to be asked about in your interviews. If your performance experience hasn't been a big enough part of your life lately to talk about in depth, you probably shouldn't put it down.

Not necessarily...

My first try at a username was "Dr. Feel Good." Unfortunately, there was another fan of the Crue on here that beat me to the punch. I do admit to being a fan of the RxB's, but it just so happens that their name is somewhat health field related as well. Honestly, what are the chances that a ska band in the early 2000's had ANY chance of doing anything but playing monthly gigs at the local VFW/Knights of Columbus?

Does a wannabe musician count. I have always wanted to learn to play the drums but have never had the money to buy a set, the space and the time to practice. I doubt that I will have enough time during med school.

I play keyboards and have no intention of stopping. I play Gospel, R&B and a little Jazz. I hope there are more musicians at UCLA so we can start a band. 🙂

I'm Greek and have been part of a Greek Folk dance group for almost 11 years, and have been competing annually for 6 years. I play the piano, and I founded and now direct a Byzantine Choir that I am also a member of. A couple years ago, I also started teaching a young choir (ages 5-12) and I sing in my church choir, although not all of this fits on my amcas app so I'm just listing the more important things to me.

Last year, an MD/PhD was a piano soloist with my orchestra. She performed the Beethoven piano concerto beautifully...proof that you never have to give up music if it is important to you!🙂

Do we have to be asian to reply??

I have a BM in orchestral instrument performance and don't intend to ever quit playing. Even if I have only 15 minutes a day to pull out some scales, I'll keep on going. I'm really hoping to find someone to play chamber music with when I get to school this fall.

I loved playing my sax (tenor), especially jazz, but it's been gathering dust over the last few years between work/school. What kind of sax do you play?

I have BM in cello performance from a conservatory. Of course, I spent 2+ years after I gratuated playing rock music (as a cellist! (well, and backing vox)) and playing with a lot of neat people and touring alot and stuff. And while you certainly can't keep up that level of play while a pre-med or whatever, you can still do some stuff. As with anything else it seems, it's a matter of time management and organization. But I'm of the opinion that you always find some time for what's important to you and is something that's not studying for O-chem (which is what I tell myself everyday right now... O-chem is not life...) 😉

I lack originality. I started the piano when I was 7. I started the violin when I was 11. To this day I shudder at the sight of scales... It reminds me of my asian-american-poster-child days... with glasses and all. Yuck. But I still play. Nothing releases stress better than just going at it on a fiddle!

I've been playing guitar since I was 13 🙂 Started out with Classical and Spanish (I used to dance Flamenco as well). Then I got an acoustic and last year I bought my electric guitar. 😀 Is awesome! I play all the time....usually right after I get home from work or right before I go to bed..I find that it relaxes me 🙂

I used to play tenor nearly exclusively, but lately I've been splitting time equally between alto, tenor & soprano

TOO MANY GUITARISTS!!

Trombone, all the WAY, baby!!! (although i also play baritone/euphonium and VERY little french horn)

Not enough BRASS on the this thread.

In college I am involved in marching band, show/pep band, and concert band and for those I get credit cause I am music minor. Hopefully the music thing will help me look original and unique to the adcoms.

When in doubt, follow your bone.

yay, my first post 😎 i play guitar mostly but also bass, piano and a little bit of drums and trumpet.

i'm with you all the way on the horn section dr thom.

oh, and the kind of music i play is whatever sounds good 😛

edit: oh yeah, and i spin the ones and twos a little for fun. yay vinyl.

Hi! I love music and I play the piano and the flute, but one of my major activiities in college was a cappella. I definately listed it on my application, as I often devoted 10-15 hours per week rehearsing and performing with the California Golden Overtones (maybe some of you at Berkeley may have seen us on Sproul). I had a great time and I encourage anyone who used to do choir in high school to try a cappella It is so much fun and if you get into a good group you can put together some really challenging and interesting arrangements. I'll be starting school at USC in a few weeks, I'm hoping I'll get to do something musical there, but my lab parters will probably just have to put up with me as I sing to myself:laugh:
