  1. Veterinary Student
Hello...I must joined SDN and was wondering if any of you are music majors who will be applying to veterinary school. I am graduating from a liberal arts college in the Orlando area with a Bachelors in Biology and Music (cello performance). It's been a crazy four years, but totally worth it! Taking 28-34 credit hours per semester, and walking from a microbiology class to an orchestral conducting class back to back really messes with your head.

Helllooooooooooo!!!!

+pity+

This thread actually made me giggle little bit....not because it is bad to be a music major, but because my best friend is a music major and applied this cycle to vet school. We always called her the "band geek" at the clinic where we work, but I really think the different background worked out well for her in applications! She ended up getting an acceptance and multiple waitlists! Good luck!!!

My friend is a music major, and even though she's not applying to veterinary school, I am constantly amazed by how much she works her butt off. The number of credits she takes PLUS alllllll of the hours she spends practicing, rehearsing, performing, etc. is really impressive. I think she and the architecture students at my school are the most insane (in a good way!) people I know.

You should be SO proud of yourself and what you have accomplished already in life! 🙂

Hey, close to you: I was a Music Theater major!!! Can you get any farther from Vet Med than that?!? At least you have the BS in Biology going for you. I think it shows how well rounded you are and should make for one hell of an interesting personal statement on your applications.

My biggest fear when applying was not being taken seriously because I was a union singer and actor for several years before applying. People seem to be MORE interested in me because it is something foreign/unique. The assistant dean at one school called to tell me his daughter remembered seeing me in a touring show I was in...talk about a great ice breaker for interviews.

Good luck to you, it can be done.....I got accepted to 3 different schools....WOO HOO!!!

I have a Bac of Music. I got into two schools and waitlisted at one and I didn't have the bio major. I had to go back for virtually all of my pre-reqs. So, I think it's great that you have the bio major as well. The music degree will go a long way to show you are a well rounded person on your apps.

Music major, check!

Oboe/English horn performance, Ithaca College

A Penn vet I work with was a music major and bio minor, shes absolutely brilliant!

I double majored in religious studies and biology and minored in history. God, I miss those classes... 😎

I definitely thought about majoring in music (harp) but I decided it would be easier to just major in Nutrition (and besides, I LOVE food!) But I did buy a harp last weekend so I can still play for fun, even though it is a very tiny harp. I think it would be so cool to work as a veterinarian and also teach harp lessons and perform at people's weddings on the side, though I'm not sure how well that would work out.

I was a cellist too! I even went to a school with a conservatory so I could keep playing...and then promptly took up a sport and an art major. I am always impressed though by music majors, because I know exactly how much time you spend practicing! I think adcoms like that stuff too, they must get tired of interviewing the same white 21 year old girl who has done nothing but shadow vets since high school, no offense anyone! I am white and a girl, and I'm 21, or at least I was in 1995, ha ha ha!

Not a music major, but I miss the French horn from my high school days. I still believe that my time as a member of our (rather stellar) marching band really helped shape me, and it's part of the reason why I'm a good team player and mediator... that's the role I took during band as well.

Oh, I want a French horn... anyone have one laying around? 😛

I'm a white girl, but I'm 22. Big difference. Haha. I'll be 23 by the next go-round though.

Well, at 23 my head was still firmly planted up my a** so I think you are still ahead of the game!

I do think though that this would be an excellent year to take up professional belly dancing, or roller derby, that looks like wicked fun. As long as you enjoying yourself there is no harm in doing something interesting that you enjoy, and makes you look interesting.

Or if you already do interesting things, play them up. french horn, play them up, get it? I crack myself up! Which is good, since the rest of the room is silent.🙂

Yup. I have a BA with a double major in music (voice principal) and religion.

At the time I had no idea I was interested in vet med. I didn't make that discovery until a few years out of undergrad.

Ironically, the very first thing I learned as a freshman music major was "The only time in life you really have a problem is when you can't pee". (The voice division chair was a couple french fries short of a happy meal.) Since I work in an ER and deal with at least one blocked cat a day, that has more relevance to my life than I ever imagined at the time!
