Hey guys, does anyone know if any dental schools are opening up in the next couple of years? I think there is one in Utah? Not sure though. UT-Austin is opening a medical school in a year or so...but im not sure if a dental school is coming also. Anyone?

apparently hawaii is supposed to have a new school but it sounds really really sketchy. the trend over the last decade has been closings not openings. it sure is expensive to keep a dental school in business!

Like you mentioned there are talks of a school opening at the University of Utah in the next couple of years. I've heard that it will probably happen despite local dentists fighting against it.

what I here freshman class will be 2009, 60 students, 2/3 instate, it will be interesting to see if it passes legislature though

Harvard out, University of Utah in!!!

They are building a brand new dental school in conjunction with the osteopathic medicine school that just opened in Blacksburg(VCOM). Both schools are private and will be rather expensive, but are associated with Virginia Tech and are on the Virginia Tech campus. I believe the dental school is slated to have their first class in Fall 2007.

Gordon Christensen, Dean at Utah?

I heard about the one in Virginia. Some areas in the country have an access to dental care crisis (poor people waiting months for dental care). The Virginia school is a response to this issue, and may have quota to accept those from underserved areas who are more likely to go back....a great idea. In terms of closing, who knows, running a dental school is expensive, Northwestern had to close b/c it wasn't getting support from the school and was located in an expensive area of an expensive city. A city that already had enough dentists to boot.

Those talks have been going on for 10+ years. It may or may not happen, but I think it'll be a tough sell pass the legislature, since there isn't a need for a school in Utah.

At an ADA meeting last June in Chicago, I spoke with Dr. Christensen. He told me he had in fact been approached by the U of U about being their Dean. Numbers he gave me were similar to those already posted. We'll see if it comes to fruition, though...

Western University in pomona california is opening one up soon.

I wonder how a dental school opening in Utah would affect admissions across the country. Would the University of Utah Dental accept primarily in-state applicants (Mormons) thereby decreasing the Mormons that attend dental school out of state?

I heard that there is a dental school opening at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 2007.
