Good lord that’s like 3 dental schools this yr alone I heard.

How many dental schools were already announced in 2023??

It’s becoming an annual thing to hear a new school opening up

There was like 5-6 to my knowledge. Lyon College, NeoMed, PNWU, Ana G Mendez University, Ponce Health Sciences, and Pikesville University

Go to the first post. I think I listed them all there.

Also you can watch our discussion about the new veterinary schools...

Who wants to be a part of a country club with tons of members? Dentistry was always attractive because it was hard to gain entry. That’s fading away. Pay to play. Pay to become a dentist. You want to be an orthodontist? You can pay for that too! This doesn’t seem worth it unless you specialize in something niche.

I’m sure they’re all super affordable though…

Break it to the predents that you usually have to pay tuition for a dental residency program... gently.

Im finding dentistry is just like an expensive boat, you just keep pouring money into it and hope for the best lol.

It is very sad. I idolized my solo GP growing up. It’s like the age of the cowboy and the West, slowly fading away. I also thought orthodontics was the coolest thing ever. It’s losing charm, well, economically at least. Still a fascinating specialty.

You'd basically be better off doing anything other than dentistry at this point. Cost of entry is absurd. Financial return isn't there for most to justify the cost to enter. The number of new schools opening is insane. It was oversaturated 10 years ago before all of these schools. Good luck to you entering the field. You'll need it.

From Becker's
Temple University is planning to open a dental school in Tamaqua, Pa., which will be the first rural dental school in the state, according to a June 19 report from Times News.

Students at the Temple University Kornburg School of Dentistry would study at the university’s Philadelphia campus for two years, then work and live at the new campus in Tamaqua to train for two years.

Amid Ismail, BDS, dean of the Temple University dental school, made the announcement at a state Senate Majority Policy Committee.

The new school aims to reduce dental workforce shortages in rural areas of Pennsylvania. The PA Coalition for Oral Health said that the state needs 2,000 dentists, 7,000 dental hygienists and 10,000 expanded function dental assistants to ensure each resident receives regular dental services.

The university is also considering adding schools at five other rural sites.

Dr. Ismail said that about 20 students would attend the new school each year, which could open in September 2026, the report said.

Great news! So more people can flock to Pittsburg, Philadelphia and other metropolitan areas when they graduate!

It gets even better! Since the school is in a rural area, they probably won't have enough patients for the students, so they probably will have a terrible clinical experience!

But hey! At least somebody behind the scenes is getting rich in the name of "AcCeSs tO cArE"!

Founding a new dental school, DO, or really an MD school as well is a meme at this point

I can’t believe people are still considering opening up new dental schools. Certainly, all these new/proposed schools will have a COA of $500k or more. Hasn’t anyone told them that the recent changes to federal student loans are very likely going to result in school closures? Their “business model” is now wholly unsustainable.
